"Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing,--
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."
Macbeth (IV, i, 14-15)
Newt Gingrich is blessed with a brilliant intellect and an unfortunate first name. But that name came in handy as I thought about this passage from Shakespeare. If there were any phrase to describe Gingrich's rapid rise through the Republican presidential ranks, it's "a charm of powerful trouble."
Gingrich was written off, left for dead over the summer as his campaign seemingly imploded over stories of a mass staff exodus and extravagant spending sprees at Tiffany's. "There goes Newt again, people would say. I like him. He's clearly the smartest guy in the room. But he's so undisciplined. And he's got so much, you know, baggage." Meaning: the Clinton wars of the 1990s and the personal issues with his previous marriages.
But who's to say what's baggage and what's not? And who's to say what's damaging baggage and what's baggage people can live with? Voters decided they could live with Bill Clinton's baggage---and he had a whole Louis Vuitton set. Let the American people decide what they can live with and what they can't with regard to a candidate. If GOP primary voters decide that Newt is too baggage-laden, they'll spurn him. They might, however, decide that they're over all that stuff...and the rest of the country might agree.
The longtime frontrunner, Mitt Romney, has played it safe and low-key, efficiently waiting as one challenger after another has risen and faded: Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and most recently, Herman Cain. Cain still has some juice left but the sexual harassment allegations against him have taken a toll. He's receding a bit in the most recent polls.
Which brings us to Newt Gingrich. Those polls show him either tied for first place with Romney or pulling slightly ahead. Is he just another flash in the pan like the others, or does he have staying power? Can he stay disciplined and on message or will he wander off the reservation and shoot himself in the foot? Will the tortoise beat the hare?
Unanswered questions. But for now, Newt is rising for the following reasons: He's a serious conservative intellectual. He's a no BS guy who speaks with authority and absolute fearlessness. And everybody knows that he would crush Obama in a debate with the sheer force of facts, conservative principles, innovative ideas and his total confidence in all of those things.
He is a "charm of powerful trouble" for Romney right now and may be ultimately for Obama. He is also a "hell-broth boil and bubble" for his opponents. Those who underestimate him do so at their peril.
Delightful and spot on piece, Monica.

Newt is a political chameleon. Some of us remember and I was on active duty during the budget battle with Clinton and the government shut down. When the kitchen got too hot, Newt folded like a cheap suit and out the window went the contract with America. Then who could forget his commercial with Nancy Pelosi pimping for global warming, to me this was unforgivable. In May 2011 he was on meet the press pushing for an individual mandate for healthcare coverage. He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Buyers beware and do your homework. It’s all in the public domain for those who have eyes to see. This doth raise a question boding "powerful trouble": Are the ladies, and such, throughout the land, ready to sing "Hey nonny, nonny Newt"?
Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more,
Men were deceivers ever,
One foot in sea, and one on shore,
To one thing constant never.
Then sigh not so, but let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe
Into hey nonny nonny.

gringoNOTE: Like him or not (I have mixed feelings), the Newt obviously understands the Obamunists and their hoary Marxist Class Warfare. He even seems willing to throw it smack in their prog pusses. Regardez....
/////The idea of 99 percent of the population versus 1 percent of the rich, which Occupy Wall Street protestors have made their mantra, is just wrong, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said on “The Kudlow Report” last night.
“I am for 100 percent,” he said. “I think this idea of 99 percent and 1 percent is grotesque European socialist class warfare baloney.”
And President Obama is playing right along with that class warfare by expressing sympathy for the protesters, he added.
“I repudiate anybody who wants to divide Americans and I think that that there is a fundamental destructive quality to this 99 percent idea,” Gingrich said. “I think that it is shameful the president of the United States would engage in class warfare and pit Americans against each other in way which can only be destructive of the fabric of American society.”

RICH GALEN////Looking back four years it is easy to see why Newt feels this is a very fluid situation. According to RealClearPolitics.com this week in 2007 Rudy Giuliani was sitting atop the GOP field at 30%. Behind him - well behind him were Fred Thompson (16% and John McCain 15%). Romney was just behind them at 12%, Mike Huckabee was at 9 and Ron Paul was at 4 percent.
The Iowa results just six weeks later Giuliani got the support of only three percent of the caucus-goers (although he had announced he would not campaign there) and Mike Huckabee won with 34 percent.
On the other side of the aisle at this point in the proceeding four years ago Hillary Clinton had an insurmountable lead over Barack Obama of 48 - 21. John Edwards was third with 12 percent.

Yes, Rick Perry is done, done, done, but....
NEWSMAX////Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's disastrous debate performance last week has hurt his campaign, but may not be fatal, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.
After watching a video of the Texas governor stumbling while trying to name three government agencies he would eliminate if elected, 48 percent of registered Republicans thought less favorably of him, the poll found.
But while 31 percent of Republicans said Perry should drop out of the race, many more -- 52 percent -- said he should stay in.

....If Romney is the nominee, the Tea Party and the Blue Dog Democrats could easily find common ground in forming a new party based on fiscal responsibility, foreign policy pragmatism (not my preference, but oh well), and domestic policy federalism. Such a party would probably have enough of the electorate behind it from the start that the entire focus of both the Republican and Democratic campaigns would shift to neutralizing that threat. I don’t think that the Republican party could survive that, just as the Whigs and the Federalists were themselves destroyed when they reached similar moments of crises of purity, and responded by sticking with a formula 20 years out of date.

Agree.
The new found awe and admiration over Newt's intellectual prowess will be short lived, I suspect. The rejuvenation of Newt, I beleive, is temporary and will surely dissipate amongst the conservative wing of the electorate shortly after a critical reexamining of Newt's past behavior. When it all boils down, Newt is just another big-government liberal Republican.
Newt may be able to crush Obama in a head-to-head debate, but can he win against the Obama SUCK Media (OSM) AND Obama in a series of debates concomitant with a long campaign?

The homophiliac sees everything in terms of itself, homosexual. Art, culture. Men who marry women are just making believe, you see. Got it? Anyone who rejects their line is a 'homophobe' which itself, you see, is a 'latent homosexual.' Got it? The homophiliac "reasons' in a perfect circle. But now the homophiliac, in light of Penn State, is making an exception: Men fondling and abusing boys--homosexual? Oh, no, how could you think that? That's just a 'pedophile,' That's just 'violence.' That's not homosexual. Get it? Everything else in his world is 'gay' (a word stolen from English literature)---everything except men violating boys. What, you disagree? How could you disagree? You're really a homo, why not admit it?....The circle goes round and round in their heads.

The Pelosi VISA conflict of interest (COI) is interesting because of lobbying details in it. VISA got an associate of Pelosi to join their lobby effort. This resulted in campaign contribution and an offer to her husband to attend an exclusive IPO offering of VISA shares. I am assuming that other sorts of offers and deals are possible to influence a Congressperson - including real estate deals, special loans, gifts, vacations, offers to relatives, etc.
Pelosi detaches herself from involvement in VISA shares by saying her husband and she have totally separate finances. This is in her mind a legality. In our minds it is just an evasion of responsibility.
The essential conflict of interest is Pelosi's politics- against VISA's swipe fees, but for Paul to show up at the exclusive offering, making other buyers think they knew Nancy's real political position,so they would go in.
WE have seen many other conflicts in Nancy, her relatives showing up all over - in Solyndra and Countrywide. Nancy's right arm does not know what her left arm is doing.
Come clean, Nancy! Tell them, well.... maybe we need to reform Lobbying- which had been a discussion in a hallway. Now it is a fishing expedition by an associate who fulfills your Christmas wish list.

GRINGO DICTIONARY.....PROGASITE, a noun.
1. a troll, a progressive parasite.
2. the Internet form of Marxist/Union Obamavilles, such as the Occupy Wall Street example of urban blight.
3. a progasite feeds 24/7 on a conservative host. When this species of troll finds a conservative host with weakened or non-existent immune system,(as in no adult supervision) such as Monicamemo (an Internet equivalent of Obamaville Occupying Wall Street, with Zucotti Lung etc) the progasite feeds voraciously. Inadvertently, the progasite shows the true nature of socialism beneath the sanctimony and prog platitudes and "compassion" cliches. It is vicious and Marx/union/fascist to the core, i.e. progasitic, a system that invades and feeds on others, hoping to render the host captive, if not lifeless. (Another example of how the Socialist Jihad parallels the radical Islamic one.) Monicamemo's "Open House" for progasite life forms reinforces the progasitic credo. In fact it makes the infestation very revealing. These life forms demonstrate the Prog March on America, as they arrogantly squat, just like fascist thugs, in conservative living room. .
