Some developments over the past few days:

1. Fitch Ratings announced that it was lowering the outlook on U.S. debt to "negative." A full downgrade can't be far behind.

2. American Airlines announced that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankrupcy protection.

3. Obama announced that the United States "stands ready to do our part" to help Europe "resolve this issue." "This issue" refers to their crushing debt. Do we have "that issue" here at home? See #1.

4. Obama's Department of Health and Human Services denied Indiana's and Louisiana's requests for a temporary respite from ObamaCare's medical loss ratio requirements, meaning they'll have to ramp up ObamaCare's requirements a lot sooner than they will be fiscally able to do so. Those 2 states join North Dakota and Delaware in being dissed by Obama's HHS, which apparently doesn't care that the states are broke and can't take ObamaCare on.

5. On the retirement of Democrat Barney Frank from Congress, the White House said, "This country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank." Indeed. In his full-throated defense and advocacy of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and giving loans to people who had no way to ever pay them back, he pretty much singlehandedly sparked the financial crisis.

6. Frank becomes the 13th Congressional Democrat to announce his retirement. So much for the vaunted Obama coattails.

7. Iranian protesters have stormed the British embassy in Tehran over a new wave of sanctions on the regime.

8. Pakistan is in flames after a NATO airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistanis are burning Obama in effigy and the U.S. image there is described as the "worst ever." If this had occurred under President Bush, he would have been crucified by the Left for blowing up such a critical alliance.

9. Over the holiday weekend, when all of these things were brewing, Obama played golf, caught a college basketball game and ate a hot dog.

This article exposes Obama's ties to MF Global, including $108,650 in campaign contributions as well as $500,000 raised by John Corzine. Also, guess where Obama had his first New York reelection fundraiser? Corzine's home on Fifth Avenue. The Washington Post points out another move showing Corzine's close ties to the administration:

MF Global recently made a bond sale with an unusual clause, saying the interest rate on the bonds would rise 1 percent if Corzine ended up being appointed to a post in the Obama administration. There has been speculation that he could be in line for Treasury secretary if the president is reelected.

Monica, you might want to take a refresher course in economics. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac don't give loans. They just provide funds. In spite of their sweetheart deals to get unlimited credit, as corporations by the Milton Friedman/Rush Limbaugh doctrine their only duty is to make a profit which they do handsomely. Nobody says profit has to be honest. The bad loans were mainly caused by market demand for fuel for derivatives and the fact that everybody along the way collects fees with the government holding the bag of crap at the end of the line. They are still doing it. We are still receiving solicitations to refinance the house at up to 125% of value. Reports are now coming out banks got a lot more money than reported and used it only to get bigger and make more profit. They didn't get rid of any of the bad debt. Rush, in trashing the Occupy people, let out that banks paid back more than they took in bailouts, but I wonder if that includes the secret stuff.

Sort of comical it appears Dems are ready to hand over the presidency and both houses to Republicans figuring as the economy gets even worse the Republicans won't be successful in blaming it all on Obama. The economy will almost certainly get worse. As the Harry Dent group points out things aren't back to where the bubbles started. Private debt is even greater threat than government debt and things won't get better till the next generational cycle.

Actually the pretense of affordable housing for the poor was just a cover for what was going on. The biggest housing bubbles were in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Miami, especially in million dollar properties. Adjustible rate mortgages, which columnists at Newsmax and Moneynews were warning about well before the collapse, were introduced in the Reagan administration. The push for deregulation to allow people to borrow against pretend equity in their homes was done to get people to pay off credit card interest which had been loaded up so they couldn't pay it off otherwise. All the properties bought just with the intention of flipping them didn't have anything to do with housing for the poor. Certainly Barney and various Friends of Mario were complicit in not doing things that could have been done to discourage the bubbles, but money motivated them to go along. Home ownership is of benefit to the general economy because of what we spend on maintenance. If there were really a desire to provide good housing for the poor, there would be a push to build low cost rental property.
