From The Sublime To The Ridiculous

I awoke this morning thinking about what a profound anniversary it was: June 6. Sixty-seven years ago today, thousands upon thousands of our extraordinary, brave young men stormed the beaches of Normandy and began the greatest liberation from evil the world has ever known. Most were mere teenagers. They came from every corner of the nation. They knew not what lay ahead of them as they crossed the choppy waters of the English Channel in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944. All they knew was that their nation needed them, and they answered the call. The American (and British and Canadian) forces landed on Utah, Gold, Sword, Juno, and the bloodiest of them all, Omaha, and fought past Hitler's Atlantic Wall. The casualties were so heavy that only the battle of Antietam during the Civil War surpassed it in terms of American battle dead and wounded.

I thought about those brave men today as soon as I opened my eyes. I thought about their courage, their valor, their absolute sacrifice for freedom and for country.

I close out today having to listen to the ever-increasingly tawdry details of a Congressman's illicit internet sexual dalliances. From the sublime to the ridiculous, indeed.

The soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines of the great Allied Expeditionary Force of D-Day fought for our system of government, which, I'm sad to say, often gives us the likes of Anthony Weiner (and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eliot Spitzer and Charlie Rangel and John Ensign and Bill Clinton and John Edwards....I could go on but the internet has limited space.) They fought for our right to be free, even if we take that freedom and be stupid with it.

Those who came ashore in France 67 years ago today deserve our deepest and most profound gratitude. Perhaps if Weiner had used the brain at the other end of his body, he would have reflected on the sacrifices of those who came before him and made his career and liberty possible---and perhaps he would have behaved in a manner befitting that sacrifice.

Thanks for posting this Monica. During a Civil War sesquicentennial event, I noticed how many people don't care. I seem to be the only person who attends these events that doesn't have an ancestor who fought in the Civil War. (No one in my family owned any slaves either.)

(INTERNET) For all the talk about lesson planning, creative learning, compassionate engagement, etc., from the education reform crowd, how often is it asked: Do our teachers know their subjects?

When Joy Behar, of all people has to defend Sarah Palin from your bizarrely gratuitous swipe, you know you let your hate lead you too far into Whackyland.

Listen (if you can stand the noise of this show) to Walters talking about how she “knows” Weiner and “knows” his wife, who of course works for Hillary Clinton, whom she also knows.

This is the problem with the mainstream media in a nutshell. They “know” the people they’re supposed to be covering, and they consider themselves “friends” of those people. And it has ruined them. As you listen to Walters, all you see is passionate advocacy; not a newswoman concerned with the truth of a story, but a partisan doing everything she can to divert attention from a story she doesn’t like — even to comparing a private citizen on a bus to a sitting congressman having some sort of cyber-engagement in his office — and championing her “friend.”

This has never been a nice story, which is why I haven’t written about it until now. But I still am less interested in Weiner than in how the press reacted to this story. Some were willing to believe him, simply because he said they should. Some seemed like they didn’t want to believe him, but didn’t want to not believe him, even more. The usual partisans tried to blame and smear the usual partisans.

We don’t actually have a genuine press any more.

Thank God for the Internet, says I. I wonder how much longer we’ll be able to traipse its environs freely.

It's not just ethics...it's the fact that there could be (probably are) more pictures, texts, who knows what else...material that could be used to blackmail Weiner in an effort to keep it quiet. What committees does he serve on? How much sensitive information does he have knowledge of/access to that would interest this country's enemies?
