More dispatches from the Age of Obama:

1. The jobs situation continues to deteriorate. The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly edged higher last week. Initial claims for jobless benefits increased 1,000 to 427,000, according to the Labor Department. The forecast was for claims to drop to 415,000 from 422,000. Whoops. This means that first-time claims have been above the 400,000 mark for the ninth week in a row. Analysts normally associate a level below that with steady job growth. In May, a paltry 54,000 new jobs were created, half of them by McDonald's, God love 'em. But there is literally no job creation happening anywhere else in this economy.

2. For a guy who won his party's nomination on a fiercely anti-war platform, Barack Obama sure "hearts" his wars. In addition to surging the number of troops in Afghanistan and contemplating keeping some troops in Iraq beyond the final withdrawal date at the end of the year, he has initiated a new war in Libya that is now a nightmarish collective-action stalemate. And The New York Times reports today that he has ordered an escalation of the drone attacks in Yemen. I have agreed with these policies---except for the Libyan war, which is ludicrous, counterproductive, and at this point in the War Powers Act timeline, illegal. But this much is now clear: any remaining hope on the Left that this guy is the anti-Bush should be gone with all deliberate speed. Who's the cowboy now?

3. Some national security analysts are now saying that Iran may be only two months away from having an operational nuclear weapon. The regime talks openly of conducting a nuclear test and of tripling its uranium production. A nuclear Tehran would be a horrific game-changer for the region and the world, a major source of instability and war. And yet, Obama still holds out hope for talks and the olive branch.

4. Obama's "legacy" domestic policy---socialized medicine known as ObamaCare---was subjected to yet another withering judicial assault this week, as a three judge appellate court pounded the administration's point man on it, Solicitor General Neal Katyal. They hit him repeatedly on the central question: if the government can force you to buy health insurance, is there any limit to what they can force you to buy? Katyal's response? Crickets and tumbleweeds.

5. As the debt ceiling fight looms large, along with battles over spending and taxes and growth, one of Obama's key guys in the Congress, Anthony Weiner, is embroiled in a mess which now involves the nation seeing his full monty. His party is now distracted and even more unserious about the big issues than ever.

Overall, not a good week for the Bama. This follows another horrible week last week, when nearly all economic indicators took a dive.

The Obama's annual multi-week August vacation can't come soon enough, although knowing him, he'll take some mini-vacays before then. He might think he can escape the heat of Washington, but he will find that grim reality will follow him everywhere.

Welcome to the presidency, Mr. Obama. Tougher than you thought, huh?

I'm not sure I want to extend unemployment because I personally know people who have changed their job search based on the last extension.

Meaning they were ready to go to accept a job when their initial unemployment was running out but are happy to keep looking while they receive further benefits.

I do agree that we need minimum involvement in islamic lands and since Bin LAden is dead why not take our military home and station them on the border instead?

Even so, those on TANF and food stamps should be able to provide services like picking up freeway trash to provide some benefit for society, rather than become parasites. Everybody should produce something if they are able.

UG, in effect what Bachmann has just done is create a whole bunch of enemies -- those being Palin supporters/sympathisers. Because of that, she's just unwittingly destroyed her chances. Secondly she's allowing her hired gun to damage Palin. Again, Rollins is not only effectively damaged Bachmann beyond repair, but he's also hurting Palin, i.e.,Rollins is sabotaging two campaigns with one stone. A man of Rollins calibre couldn't have done this haphazardly. This act of sabotage was cunning and carefully crafted, IMO.

It makes me wonder who talked Bachmann into hiring Rollins? Rove, perhaps? Surely it had to have been a very slick anti-Tea Party Republican insider. Either that or Bachmann is politically inept. If either case is true, then it's better she gets knocked out early.

The Gringo Advisory Board believes DJ is rolling on Rollins. Rollins is clearly functioning as a de facto Gooper snake in the conservative grass. Snake's primary mission is to help derail for Club Gooper the Palin Insurgency. The only question remotely debatable is whether Bachmann hired said snake out of deviousness, complicit with Club Gooper, or whether she hired snake out of sheer stupidity. Neither speaks well of her politically. Her "managerial" snake is even on record, a year earlier, questioning her own "seriousness," let alone Palin's. Yet she now employs him.

I agree with this. We should discuss in private how this might be implemented. We need a pre-fab statement to be posted whenever a troll posts an outright lie.

No personal replies, no addressing the troll by name, but a tersely worded disclaimer.

TBSH, did you read Gringoman's comment re. OPC above? I think he's correct in pointing out that we have to agree to a common approach to designated trolls.

Right now there are two of them and we all know who they are.

Gringoman is right in that we feed them way too much.

Thus we must all agree not to deal with them in any way.

I want to create a standard disclaimer statement that can be used by any of US whenever a troll posts an outright lie.

Rather than bother replying to each lie with a detailed response, the disclaimer is posted naming the two trolls for the casual surfer's knowledge.

We say something like that these are uninvited posters who are suspected dem-bots and that the veracity of their claims should be carefully determined by the critical reader..

We could of course ask others who are not officially on board but who are posters whom we consider as reasonable and interesting - which covers a broad spectrum of opinions by the way - to try and respect our efforts at curbing the excessive libaganda foisted on us by you-know-which-two.

FYI Actually, that's originally from the Foreign Affairs "Brain Trust" of Monica's old boss, Richard Nixon, and it applies directly to women, whether Monica admitted it or not. Back in the day, Henry Kissinger was widely quoted for "Power is the greatest aphrodisiac." Irony and satire aren't big among Americans, so most didn't catch or appreciate the full European savor of Kissinger's insight, i.e. Power has a way of attracting women to unattractive men.

At the time, I put no credence in Bush calling Clinton a "bozo." I didn't know Clinton, so assumed that Bush was just doing partisan jive. But somebody who went to Georgetown with Clinton did know him: The financial advisor and highly successful investor, Doug Casey. A cover of Casey's magazine, at the time, depicted Clinton as a circus clown with a painted face. At the time I thought that was outrageous, no more to be trusted than Bush's "bozo" comment. Rush is being pretty d*mn supportive of Sarah Palin right now. Can't say I am hearing that much support for her from anyone else.

Maybe I've been wrong about Rush?

I certainly feel let down by Savage recently but am willing to give him a chance to think things over and clarify his more recent positions, which - frankly - ar eyebrow-raisers.
