Over the past year or so, there has been a lot of cheerleading the U.S. economy---talking up whatever relatively positive signs that appear---as a way to change the psychology around it. The thinking goes: if the perception grows that the economy is growing, then the economy will actually grow. That wishful thinking approach to a healthy, robust economy is clearly not working.
The Associated Press reports the facts today:
"Stocks fell in morning trading Thursday, a day after their first gain this week, following disappointing news about jobs and economic growth.
"The Labor Department said more people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the first increase in three weeks. The number of people seeking benefits rose by 10,000 to 424,000, more than analysts were expecting.
"Applications are above the 375,000 level that indicates sustainable job growth. Applications peaked at 659,000 during the recession. Employers stepped up hiring this spring, but some economists worry that rising applications indicate a slowdown in hiring.
"The Commerce Department said the economy grew at a sluggish 1.8 percent in the January-March quarter as surging gasoline prices and sharp cutbacks in government spending overshadowed strong corporate earnings. Consumer spending grew at just half the rate of the previous quarter, and less than previously estimated. A surge in imports widened the U.S. trade deficit.
"Sales of homes in some stage of foreclosure declined in the first three months of the year, but they still accounted for 28 percent of all home sales - a share nearly six times higher than what it would be in a healthy housing market."
This looks like another perfect economic storm: anemic growth, weak job creation, "astronomically high" home foreclosure rates, low consumer confidence. The Democrats had several years to get this economy going, and their approach has clearly failed. They've given us a massive expansion of government, unprecedented spending, record-breaking deficits and debt, and unaffordable socialized medicine, and the result has been a floundering, barely-there economy. The Democrats had their chance. They have failed.
If the Republicans are smart (which is a big "if"), they will lay out more than just an austerity agenda. As critical as spending cuts and entitlement reforms are, they need to be coupled with a strong growth agenda: tax cuts and reform. If they give voters more of their own money back as well as a positive message about economic growth and strength, they cannot lose----especially when voters compare that agenda with the utter economic destruction the Left has wrought.
May I suggest a new mantra for the GOP: Grow, baby, grow.
I found this article useful in a paper I am writing at university. Hopefully, I get an A+ now!

EXACTLY. Government is not the problem, per se. We need an FDA, EPA, etc. It is CORRRRUPTION, Power madness, and GREED that destroy it all; fed by the blood, sweat, and taxes of "WE THE PEOPLE". We need change---Real Honest-to-God change; just like in 1776.

I don't know if we really need the FDA. The French don't have one. And I dare say they eat better than we do. Their cows are free of hormones BY LAW, their consume cheese made from - GASP - raw milk. They have small producers all over the country who keep a few geese and make paté and foie gras. Others make cheese sold at small markets.
Exactly the kin d of thing the FDA is there to OUTLAW and CRIMINALIZE.
Last I checked, the French weren't dying in droves consuming these products.
In fact, a small French farmer or cheese producer meets his consumers weekly at market. And if something were wring with his products he'd be first to know.
The FDA, on the other hand, is set up to put farming into the hands of multi-national conglomerates who don't give a rat's face about your health and well-being.
American companies will import from China where noone cares about our health.
Sorry, but I think I'll take my chances buying at an open-air market in France. At least I'll be eating something that tastes good before I die from it.
Furthermore the FDA keeps changing the laws to allow companies to PRETEND that their stuff is something that it's not.
FDA classification for "free running chickens" is a slightly larger cage.
LOL
I'll take on the subject of the EPA soon because there's a few things to be said there too.
.

Ummah,
I agree, but again, it's corruption. For example, Raw milk in the US is banned because of lobbying by commerical dairy corps; the FDA is merely their strong-arm. I want the FDA to monitor food for Japanese radiation, water for hexavalent chromium; not stifle free markets, or Amish farmers. Sadly, it's not going to change without serious de-funding and Tea Party re-writing.
The EPA is the biggest hindrance to job creation and growth of all time. Like I have whined many times: Henry Ford would not be allowed to invent the gasoline engine today; nor Edison the light bulb (real ones).
Posted by: LongRifle | May 26, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Ummah, knowing Europe as the typical Americano does not know it, can see more easily through the bureaucracy and "regulatory" scams of the Democrats and, almost as often, the Republicans too. Even if you take Big Government "watchdogs" seriously (typical in Communist countries and among lefty ideologues who play with stats in freer countries, "Bet you can't find stats as good as mine, hee-hee!")no ideologue has ever solved the dilemna of who will watch the "watchdogs."
The Beltway Bandits now even ruin food prices, with their crazy corn subsidies for the loony Ethanol Project, eliminating basic grain supplies for humans and cattle in the interests of a stupid, wasteful, cost-ineffective "energy alternative" that even harms gasoline engines. Thank both Democrats and Republicans for this inflationary idiocy.
What Ummah sees in Europe would be known as "Farmer's markets" in the US. Americans have been so co=opted by Big Agriculture and Big Food, and letting China "make it," they barely realize that markets all over the world, even in countries with supermercados, are tied in with or directly run by those who actually grow the produce. Yes, farmers.
Imagine that, Corporate Charley!

Palin has not revealed her plans for 2012. Gallup asked Republicans who they support in a race without Palin, and Romney still came out in the lead, but by a relatively small margin over Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. "Should Palin…not enter the race," Gallup writes, "Romney would be the clear front-runner, but arguably the weakest front-runner in any recent Republican nomination campaign."

Gringoman, I have been to farmers' markets in the US, and the nicer ones are on the North Fork of Long Island or places like Cape Cod.
The one on Union Square is overrun with self-styled anarchists and posers. Too many bad art and bad T-shirt to fight through. The whole thing is beyond exhausting!
I still think what you buy at the average French market to be superior to what we can buy here.
They have the edge when it comes to sausages, cheese and wine by the gallon in both variety and taste.
Plus the bread.. made from GMO-free flour.
There is cheese smuggling from Québec across the border to VT and NY but what a lot of effort involved unless you happen to live in those border areas.
A lot of the small farmer and artisanal production is choked by the F.ascist D.ictators A.ssociation.
This whole genetic manipulation thing and the patenting of plants and animals just gives me the creeps.
How much longer until we really do live in the Matrix?

In the strongest sign yet of a possible Sarah Palin run at the presidency, filmmaker Stephen Bannon this week announced a $1 million documentary, "The Undefeated," about her term as Alaska's governor.
Scott Conroy, a reporter at RealClearPolitics.com and co-author of "Sarah from Alaska," got a sneak peek at the documentary and said on "The Early Show" Thursday he's heard from "several reliable sources" that, over the next couple of days, another "major indicator" is going to surface that she's ready to run in 2012.

SP came to her resque and the both of them did a rally ina football stad ium which was full of highly motivated people mostly women about 50,000. You could tell they were both friends holding hands and pumping themselves & the crowd up to the point where one would think they were sisters.

OK - once more for the teachable:
1. Palin resigned because she was buried in frivolous ethics lawsuits and under Alaska law she was required to defend herself with her own money. She was paralyzed, unable to serve Alaska, going broke and effectively driven from office by the Left's thug tactics.
NOT A SINGLE ETHICS CHARGE STUCK. SEE 'FRIVOLOUS.'
Anyone who believes that Sarah Palin is a quitter knows nothing about her. She's still walking tall after all you people have shamelessly thrown at her and her kids.
2. The idea that she is a major force in politics and therefore shouldn't run for president is bizarre even by beltway standards.
3. Michelle is better because she is a 'serious person.' Everybody who has been a mayor for several years and shown incredible leadership, done public service oveseeing energy industry ethics and took on the oil industry and their own party to do what was right, gone after the same gang of corrupt Republicans and taken the governor's mansion from them, held an approval rating in a largely liberal state as a Republican in the high 80's, written two best-selling books, and singlehandedly turned the direction of the midterm elections with stunning endorsement successes, please raise your hand.
With all due respect to tax attorneys and Michelle Bachmann (both of whom I consider 'serious people'), I think SP qualifies as serious as well.
And NO, Newt Gingrich can't draw crowds of tens of thousands of people whenever he wants to. Nor can he produce the energy in the electorate that such an ability represents.
Perhaps I should let this deliberately willed illusion continue, since it will leave the left unprepared when we propel her to the nomination in 2012.

Republicans have no answers for job growth. Look at Red AZ. A huge deficit. 10.5% UI. House prices falling. Strip malls now ghost towns. High taxes (property and sales). Low wages. Wasteful government jobs (eg: Breast-feeding co-ordinator-$50k/year). AZ is VERY anti-business; just try to start a biz here and see...the regulations would choke a donkey- or an elephant. If they have any ideas, what are they saving them for?

One point being overlooked about the economy is the importance of demographics presented by Harry Dent to name one. We are an aging society mirroring the picture of Japan. We aren't going to have the sort of spending that occurred as a result of the baby boom.
As others have pointed out there is a serious problem of corruption with the drug industry and medical establishment attempting to cut people off from herbal remedies and alternative care. It's sort of comical that no one is calling Paul Ryan's "reform" of Medicare for people under 55 what it is, Obamacare, everybody just buy an insurance policy. It doesn't say much for the intelligence of the public if people really believe you can just pass a law and demand insurance companies to pay for things. All our medical care needs some real reform to bring down costs. First we could stop the abuse of the patent system which is not currently coming close to promoting the "progress of science and useful arts" as specified in the Constitution. Drug companies should be prosecuted for restraint of trade when they buy off production of out of patent drugs. We may not like Walmart for destroying capitalist businesses, but they provide a workable model of using size and power for eliminating the middle man and providing things at low price. That is what we need for real reform and we also need some serious education that we are terribly over diagnosed and treated, especially older people and children.

Police Begin “Guns Drawn” Raids on Organic Food Stores in California
May 21, 2011, 3:40 pm
For additional commentary from George on RT TV:
In a shocking development, police begin “guns drawn” raids on organic food stores in California. George speaks with an owner of Rawsome, a Venice beach organic food store caught up in one of the raids. The coverage of this story by the Los Angeles Times caused a firestorm online with many groups concerned about abuse of police powers and unnecessary safety regulations concerning the consumption of organic and raw foods. www.infowars.com Some people balk at restrictions on selling unprocessed milk and other foods. ‘How can we not have the freedom to choose what we eat?’ one says. Regulators say the rules exist for safety and fairness. With no warning one weekday morning, investigators entered an organic grocery with a search warrant and ordered the hemp-clad workers to put down their buckets of mashed coconut cream and to step away from the nuts. Then, guns drawn, four officers fanned out across Rawesome Foods in Venice. Skirting past the arugula and peering under crates of zucchini, they found the raid’s target inside a walk-in refrigerator: unmarked jugs of raw milk. “I still can’t believe they took our yogurt,” said Rawesome volunteer Sea J. Jones, a few days after the raid. “There’s a medical marijuana shop a couple miles away, and they’re raiding us because we’re selling raw dairy products?” www.latimes.com Such battles have had a chilling effect on some retailers. Whole Foods Market used to carry raw …

Not overlooked by me.
The fact is the white population is aging and being race-replaced by low IQ'ed third world Orcs at a rapid pace. Even Monica sees a problem with this. She, herself, stated on TMG that Latinos' High School graduation rates are worse than that of blacks. Monica, of course, is 100% correct. Which begs the question: Can the USA maintain its preeminent role in the world with a population comprised of a majority of blacks and browns whose mean IQ is 85? Any guesses to the answer?
BTW, the BIG difference between USA, Europe and Japan is Japan is not committing ethno-suicide via insane immigration policies. Japan's indigenous population can recover at some point in the future. The same thing cannot be said for Europe or what once was referred to as "white-America".

JAMES TARANTO ON OBAMA AND ISRAEL — AND AMERICA: “Obama’s detachment from the Jewish state is of a piece with this evident detachment from his own country. . . . Disesteem for Israel is rare in America, but it is concentrated in certain cultural pockets, the most notable of which is the academic left. Some of our friends on the right imagine that Obama is a secret jihadist or a hater like his erstwhile pastor. To put it charitably, we think this overexplains matters. Socialist like B. Obama don't even understand what causes economic growth. To them economic growth is not the main goal, the main goal is the redistribution of wealth from what they consider "rich" to the "non-rich". Business and those who have high incomes become the target of government taxation policy. They must pay their fair share of taxes in order to fund the welfare state. With this mind set the economy stagnants and tax revenues spiral down as investment and growth spiral down, and the socialists call for even larger and larger tax increases to fund the welfare state which in turn decreases investment and growth. In aviation this is called a death spiral. This is why in 1960 the top marginal tax rate was 90 percent. JFK reduced the top rate to 70 percent.
You hear this utter nonsense from radical socialists now when discussing social security and medicare. People like Michael Moore rant that the money is out their, all the gov has to do is tax it and pull the money in from the rich and corporate America and there will be no deficit problem. What he doesn't understand in that little pea brain of his is that the more you raise taxes the more you dampen private investment, hiring, growth, employment, and the creation of wealth. As the economy stagnates revenues to the gov drop, even with increased marginal tax rates.
There is no hope of economic expansion and growth under this socialist Administration. He wants to increase taxes, he refuses to cut spending, he wants active and increased regulation of business, he wants to weaken the dollar which will decrease foreign investment in this country, and he wants to massively increase the welfare state. All this spells stagnation for the foresable future.

For decades the leftniki mocked the US for not following the "progressive" ways of Europe, with its socialized medicine, guranteed doles for everybody, huge taxes, huge spending etc etc. The Americans, they repeated again and again, were "backward," "reactionary" crazily anti-communist, inhumane yada yada yada. But even today, as the Eurozone begins to implode like a socialist gas bag,(a forerunner of California et al) the Democrats and Obots and their eliteniks strive 24/7 to push the US exactly into the kind of hole that is engulfing Europe. Even their drones hop around the blogosphere with their "statistics" to show you how stupid Americans are for not following their socialist model and "taxing the rich" (i.e. another Marxist bromide that cunningly camouflages their mandate to tax everything productive that moves.) And where are the Goopers to fling back at the Obamunists the facts of Libworld's Grand Idiocy? Which of them can even talk back to their Obamasuck media hacks like a Sarah Palin can?
///////Europe also faces its day of reckoning after decades of overspending and overpromising. The Eurozone, as currently fashioned, appears to be on the verge of collapse. This helps explain the continental frenzy over the arrest of former IMF Chief and French presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Trump is feinting, smart guy that he is. Why take the heat when he can sit back and let the left destroy all his competition for him.
So there is still hope. Trump-Jeb is the only possible combination that can win over the "Vanquisher of Bin Laden." By completely locking out the "social" issues conservatives and focusing on fiscal issues solely.
But that doesn't mean the GOP/TP completely lose the house, and the Democrats gain veto-proof majorities in both houses of Congress.
THAT is a done deal, and the GOP knows it.
Watch. And be ready.

Sarah P. is already running, but Trump-Jeb will decimate her.

Monica said she thinks Sarah is going to run.

Oh, no. Did Monica beat out the crystal GringoBall, which on May 25 predicted that Sarah will run? Is there a time stamp?

---------------
Let the record reflect that Monica (during a guest appearance on the Hannity Show) opined Sarah Palin was going to run for president.
That very notable event occurred at least 9 hours AFTER the crystal GringoBall revelation was made public. ;-)

HARK!
HARK!
HARK!
My panel of experts just handed me a preliminary report on whether or not Sarah Palin intends on running for president. It reads: she does NOT intend to run for president. She has other plans for elective office. Specifics to be provided later.....

The Moonbattery never ends.
Here's a report of Moonbat vs. Moonbat:
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23953968-pay-c-charge-for-the-beast-obama.do
Barack Obama has been ordered to pay the congestion charge for his security vehicle "The Beast", Boris Johnson revealed today.
The Mayor told the Standard each car in the President's motorcade will be billed for £10 - including the bomb-proof Cadillac. Mr Johnson also said he had a discussion with Mr Obama about the US embassy's refusal to pay £5.3 million in C-charge fines.
But the embassy said its position on not paying the C-charge was "wholly in accordance" with a convention on taxing diplomats. Mr Johnson said: "Our roads were not closed during the President's visit so his motorcade will pay. The Beast will pay the charge, I'm delighted to say.

It should be noted that Boris Johnson ran for Mayor of London as the Anti-Moonbat. Now look at him.
Must be the water.

Gringoman, it appears that Monsieur DSK will be residing in a $45,000 / month luxury penthouse in Tribeca as he awaits trial or a buyout.
Saw the Socialist's new digs on the local news last night. Pretty fancy. Pretty disgusting when you think that this is a Socialist whom we are talking about here.

Ummah,
Monsieur Le Lecher Socialist is just heeding the Marxist communist mandate. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
The tax payers have the ability--- to pay for the socialist leeches; the socialist eliteniks have the need--- for Living Large in order to save us from the "greedy capitalists."
