Crickets and Tumbleweeds

My first active memory of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi was in 1986, when I remember seeing images of the flamboyant terrorist on television. Why was he on TV? Our intelligence services intercepted messages from Libya's East Berlin embassy suggesting Qaddafi had ordered the terrorist strike on a West Berlin disco frequented by U.S. servicemen that left hundreds dead. In response, President Reagan ordered a massive strike against Libya ten days later. U.S military jets bombed Tripoli and Benghazi in an operation that by all accounts stunned Qaddafi. Reagan didn't play.

Qaddafi's long list of horrors includes the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, support for all manner of Islamic and other terrorist groups, including the PLO, Carlos the Jackal, and FARC, funding the "Black September movement" that carried out the Munich massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics, and giving safe harbor to the convicted terrorist of Pan Am 103, al-Megrahi.

After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Qaddafi thought he was next, so he preemptively caved, giving up his nuclear weapons program. In return, Washington restored full diplomatic relations with Libya in 2006, but no one was under the illusion that Qaddafi was now our friend.

He is one of the world's most despicable despots and a terrorist in belief and in action. Over the past few days, he has extended that terror to his own people, ordering military jets to fire upon the thousands of protesters who have gathered to demand regime change. Qaddafi has hired mercenaries from Chad and Sudan to murder his people in the streets using hollow-point bullets. In a bizarre (is there any other way for him?) mini-speech, he said opponents "deserved to die." Yup, that's the old Colonel: what a sweetheart.

In all of the upheaval in the Middle East over the past two years, two examples in particular cry out for American presidential leadership: the revolt in Iran nearly two years ago, and the revolt today in Libya. In both cases, the regimes are enemies of the United States and state sponsors and exporters of terror; and they have revealed once again their brutality and totalitarianism by their willingness to slaughter their own people. In both cases, the people there have honestly had enough of their ruthless dictatorship and would really benefit from a few words of clear moral support from the President of the United States.

In both cases, instead of clarion calls of support for those aggrieved peoples, Obama has given them the silence of crickets and the remoteness of tumbleweeds.

When the 2009 Iranian revolt began, Obama spoke of an unwillingness to "meddle." But he was more than happy to meddle in Egypt, one of our staunchest and longstanding allies, and throw Hosni Mubarak under the bus. He's also more than willing to meddle in Israel on settlements and in the UK by giving away their nuclear secrets to the Russians, and on and on. He meddles when he wants to.

But he will not "meddle" when it matters most and costs the least: against terrorist regimes like Iran and Libya. Whose side is he on? Seriously.

Reagan once called Qaddafi "the mad dog of the Middle East." It now looks like the mad dog has met the chihuahua of the West.

Reagan didn't play. Bombs dropped. Sanctions were levied.

Obama plays. Half-hearted words are spoken. UN resolutions of mere "condemnation" are endlessly debated.

While the mad dog hangs on to what's left of his regime, he must be astonished by the American president who appears to be rooting for him.

A few words of moral encouragement? C'mon! A few words of moral encouragement in Iran or Libya would get a lot of people killed just as a few words of moral encouragement from G H W Bush got a lot of Iraqi Shites killed, something you can bet they haven't forgotten. Besides Obama probably remembers when he proclaimed it was a moral imperative to keep Americans alive even if they couldn't afford medical care, he was quickly told where he could put his moral imperative.
Libya is no Egypt which retained a vestige of nationalism and where the people retained ties with a well-disciplined military. Libya is effectively a colony of oil corporations and Qadafi will stay or go depending on what oil executives decide. It's doubtful any nation would dare even air strikes against Qadafi today and certainly not sending ground troops. If they got their butts kicked by corporate armies, it would pull back the curtain and reveal the era of nationalism and republican government is over.
We see here corporations have ordered states to destroy unions so workers have no direct representation. Citizens United wiped out any theoretical obstacle keeping corporations from buying the politicians they want in power. It's not 1986. There won't be another honest union leader elected President.

Please excuse the bluntness of this message, but I want to be both objective and clear. I have looked at the posts for the past few days, and your blog officially SUCKS.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy your commentary and the posts of several others who make thoughtful, opinionated comments. I don't agree with everything posted here, but if it is posted with sincerity and intelligence, I respect the opinion, even if I disagree. But I have to be honest - experiencing your blog is now similar to a stroll through a completely untended dog run. There are droppings from "Satan" and X-Lax everywhere, and the more intelligent posts are overwhelmed by the volume and stench of the excrement. "Squint 'n Scroll" has become the only way to navigate through the dung piles (and I'll expand that to "Squint, Scroll, and Hold your nose"). These tactics may make a visit to your blog bearable, but it doesn't mean a stroll through the excrement is enjoyable.

Your nest has been fouled, badly, and sadly there is no indication of any desire to clean up the mess.

So, without the metaphors, here's the point: It is clear that you have been infected by those who post here for the express purpose of disrupting, distracting, and diverting all intelligent discussion. Like good Alinsky-ites, they are attempting to use ridicule, fear, idiotic threats, sarcasm, and other Alinsky tools right out of the "Rulebook" to put people on the defensive and disrupt the conversation and exchange of ideas. They FEAR a reasonble, un-disrupted, intelligent exchange of Conservative ideas, so they do all possible to disrupt it. Your commentary and any sensible related dialogue have clearly become casualties of the infestation. If so, why have a blog at all? You really should have enough pride in your work to defend it and protect it. After all, it does have your name on it.

I am a huge proponent of free speech, but that does not mean we sit back and do nothing when radicals act to disrupt the conversation.

Thank you for speaking out, ROB. I feel the exact same way. Besides Monica's commentary I would miss the small online community we've been enjoying here with MJFELL, M/M, Gringoman, DJ, ROB and others, in case I left anyone out.

I also visit other boards and they have much better lib/spam controls than here, but there are also more posters and people don't communicate quite as directly as we've ben used to hear.

I'd hate to lose the friendly and informative atmosphere we've been sharing, with the usual kill-joys, who now seem to be increasing in numbers like flies on a freshly deposited pile of dogsh*t.

I think the increased presence of libs on the Memo is part of the recently revealed White House strategy of paying operatives to influence opinion on Conservative boards.

Here's a little insight. There is a connection between the troll disease at Monicamemo and Monica's attachment to the HoBo (House of Boosh.)

How so?

The Bush Syndrome accepts, maybe even encourages, the dirtbags of the Left. Remember Bush Derangement Syndrome and how mute Georgie Bush remained about it?

The House voted to remove US funding from the IPCC. Yeah!

The IPCC is a non-trustworthy institution, have solely a political agenda, like all of climatology. The scientists would have us believe that every dried up stream , very calving glacier, every dead bird, and each hurricane is caused by cataclysmic climatic warming.
