One day, Crist thought he could ditch the Governorship to run for the Senate, and then use that office as a stepping stone to running for President, a la Hillary Clinton. He believed that the people of Florida loved him the way he loved himself.
Until they got an alternative. Marco Rubio: whip-smart, conservative, young, of Latino descent. Considered a long-shot against the popular yam of a Governor, Rubio hung in there until he pulled even in opinion polls. Crist, having governed in many areas like a liberal and having literally embraced President Obama and his failed $1 trillion economic "stimulus," saw his poll numbers tank. Rubio quickly became the GOP favorite.
Facing nearly insurmountable odds to win the Republican primary, Crist decided today to bolt the GOP and run as an Independent.
He might want to consider the words of PA Senator Arlen Specter, who left the GOP (as if he were ever in it) to become a Democrat. In an interview published today, Specter said: "I have thought from time to time that I might have helped the country more if I'd stayed a Republican."
No...given the dramatic swing away from the Democrats, he would have helped HIMSELF more if he had stayed a Republican.
Crist, like Specter, has no core beliefs beyond his own political preservation. And if the anti-incumbency tidal wave is as big as expected in November, it's going to sweep away both party-flippers with the very first wave.
If the Demoncrats continue to stoke the pockets of Hunter with currency, she may become as wealthy as Sarah Palin, or even Monica Lewinsky.
All the talk about a Republican backlash - quo vadis?
Who cares about an independent that is not from the Tea Party, or ... RINOS?
Anyone can win, form any Party, depending on issues. NO doubt there will be a large turnover among longstanding incumbents that have voted against the well being of the country.
Crist always reminded me of a beauty contest winner, or a real estate agent.

Oh and speaking of RINOs, i was over on Moonbattery where I read that Karl Rove came out against the Jan Brewer - signed bill in Arizona.
Seems like the Rovester sees the writing on the wall.. and wants to shore up KuntryKlub hold on power inside the GOP.
It seems that another Bush, namely Jeb, is preparing a run of his own in 2012.
To which I say: not just NO, but HELL NO!
Because I will NOT - repeat I will NOT - vote for Jeb Bush nor for Hucksterbee.

Congress and the UN is considering an air tax - based on average respiration rates. Taxes for exhaled CO2 would be less for people of low weight, and people who live in degraded air. Tagging people in the US with the tax is no problem, but getting everyone globally to pay, has always been a problem.
People exhale about 1000 lbs of CO2/annum. Active heavy people might have twice that amount.
Is an egg a vegetable? It is according to a starving Hindu pandit, who, living in degraded air with high particulates might exhale only 200 lbs of CO2/year.

Ummah,
I regretfully have to agree with X-Lax when it contends Jeb Bush is probably the only one who can defeat 'The Bama' in 2012. But let's assume Jeb doesn't run, the GOP will probably choose as its candidate either Romney or Huckabee. Neither of which, IMO, will be able to defeat Obama. This is the sorry state we conservatives find ourselves in.

Trust me, Ummah, if Jeb runs he will win. He is the ONLY Republican that can garner a majority of the vote in AmeriKWA. If you, not you specifically Ummah, want to envision the future U.S.A., look at the dysfunctional governments of Latin America.

All this said I think there are a number of good potential candidates rather than King Bush III. the previous two Bushes have done plenty of damage already.

Because Romney can't beat him, Ummah. Romney is the guy that invented Obamabare. Hucabee can't beat him either. He is too milquetoast. On the other hand, Jeb Bush can clean his clock. Jeb has the prerequisite pedigree and gravitas it takes to capture the voting populaces’ respect. Too, he has always been the MOST likeable of the Bush family. The thought of another Bush in the White House disgusts me as much or more than anyone here. But out of the likely candidates the GOP will offer up to us, Jeb Bush, IMHO, has the best chance to beat Obama in the next presidential election. Look at the list of Republican presidential candidates since Reagan. GHW Bush , Bob Dole, Dubyah, John McCain; that list can described with one word - pathetic! But the GOP hasn’t learned a thing, now the likely candidates will be Huckabee or Romney. Neither of those two, for obvious reasons, can win a popularity contest against Obama. Yes I mean popularity contest! Sadly that is what presidential elections have sunk to in America. If the American people voted for the candidate with the best stance on issues, Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter would be president today; in that event, Tom Tancredo would probably be the head of Homeland Security, and John Bolton would be Secretary of State.

"Why reward a RINO for destroying the country when Obama can the job as well as they can?" - UG
Because a RINO is the ONLY Republican that can even begin to win. This "dramatic swing away from the Democrats" Princess keeps talking about is an impossible wish fulfillment fantasy fostered by Fox "News". It doesn't exist. Obama WILL pull out his base, all of it, and in all probability, given the majority of the public's absolute disgust with GOP childish obstructionist shenanigans, will GAIN seats this November.
Bush, whether you call him a conservative or not, effectively killed any chance of a hard right wing Presidency for at least a decade and perhaps more. Obama is only doing badly on the war; everywhere else he is succeeding against all odds, although the successes aren't much to brag about once the GOP guts and "transforms" them.
Posted by: xbjllb | April 29, 2010 at 01:22 PM
If Reagan was the "Teflon" President, then Obama is the bacon grease President. Even less sticks to him, no matter how truthful or heinous it is.
Posted by: xbjllb | April 29, 2010 at 01:23 PM
Jeb Bush IS the only candidate that can beat Obama in 2012. Schwarzeneggar is a equal par once Obama's birthplace is acknowledged and, uh, "rectified" and "ratified" by a bipartisan Congress.
And either would serve admirably as the other's Veep. Get either one into office, and you're looking at eight years.
Unless Hillary runs. They can easily beat Obama; Hillary? Not so sure.

I guess we are all a lot more suspicious of strange occurences than we used to be and it doesn't take much to see this particular disaster as more than a tad suspicious.
What say you?
.
Posted by: Ummah Gummah - wibbwawifm is a mental disorder | April 29, 2010 at 01:46 PM
UG, as a conspiracy guy, I hate to say it, but the most radical environmental groups definitely truly have some severe nutcases in them.
I thought the rig was sabotaged from day one, to get Obama to reverse his new drilling policies. The only reason whatever group involved didn't take credit for it is they didn't expect to kill so many people.
I mean, how hard is it to get hired as a rig worker and plant bombs and split?
And it was just too conveniently timed.
I guess that means that even Rush has his "100 monkeys at a hundred typewriters" day too.
But he can't blame Obama for this one, unless he blames his policy reversal.
But it's a bit more than hypocritical blaming the guy when he does what the right wants.
Posted by: xbjllb | April 29, 2010 at 01:59 PM
Upside is, the oil business will finally start doing background checks on workers, and security will be beefed up. Those rigs need security cameras trasnmitting wireless to onshore monitoring stations.

"Peter Brimelow writes: Did you see British Labor Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s world-class immigration gaffe today? He was caught by a lapel microphone complaining contemptuously to an aide that a (Labor-supporting) white working class woman with whom he’d just had a vigorous but apparently amicable campaign trail conversation was “bigoted”. Of course, this merely confirms what has long been obvious: the left-wing lawyers and functionaries who now run Labor secretly despise the party’s traditional base. (Sound familiar, Democrats?)
But what really interested me, however, is that this poor woman actually only made one brief passing reference to immigration (“You can’t say anything about the immigrants…”). And she was talking about Eastern European immigration i.e. no racial angle at all. However, it was enough to set Brown off.
And, amazingly, in his subsequent apology on national television, he still repeatedly excused himself on the grounds that she had dared to mention immigration. He clearly just assumed every right-thinking person would agree that any reference to immigration justified his righteous rage.
Last night, we posted our Allan Wall’s expose of the reaction in Mexico and the Spanish-language media in the U.S. to Arizona’s SB 1070. Wall revealed their relentless hatred of U.S. nationhood and sovereignty—particularly ominous in the case of those who are technically U.S. citizens.
What the Brown incident reveals is the British elite’s relentless hostility to any hint of national sentiment in their own population—and their passionate enthusiasm for immigration.
Exactly the same forces are at work in the US today (as throughout the English-speaking world—the “Anglosphere”.)
This explains the American elite’s hysterical reaction to SB 1070—which, after all, only seeks to enforce what is already the law. It also explains this disgusting development, reported last night by Politico.com’s Kasie Hunt:
HILL REPUBLICANS DODGE ON ARIZONA LAW
Democrats can’t shout loud enough about how much they hate Arizona’s harsh immigration law. But Republican lawmakers are hedging, dodging, and reaching for nuance—anything to avoid taking a strong stand on Arizona…. Everyone in the Republican Party says it’s Washington’s fault for neglecting the illegal immigration problem, but virtually no congressional Republicans are fully embracing what Arizona has done.
This despite that fact that, as James Fulford reported on VDARE.COM’s blog today, polls show that SB 1070 is overwhelmingly popular in Arizona and Governor Brewer’s approval rating has soared since she signed it.
These Beltway Republicans are afraid—afraid to take up a cause even though it would benefit them politically because they fear elite rage."
