MONICA "All of this spending will result in a doubling of the national debt in five years and a near quadrupling of it in 10 years. Deep national indebtedness doesn't sit well with most Americans. Neither does this kind of epic government intervention - particularly when it seems to be retarding job creation and economic growth rather than stimulating them."

GRINGOMAN////Really big debt? Biggest in history? The greatest pyramid scheme since Phaoronic Egypt? How about (courtesy of the Internet)....?

COMING: A DAY IN THE EMPIRE OF DEBT (possibly during the reign of the charismatic Phaoroh Tut-Bar-Ankhabama)

A Single Triggering Event Could Collapse the Dollar Overnight as the Over-Indebted U.S. Finds Itself Isolated in a World of Angry Creditors
The Day of the Dollar scenario begins with an unexplained drop in the value of the dollar in Singapore, triggering a greenback sell-off in Hong Kong. As traders in Amsterdam wake up, the dollar is down significantly against the yen and dropping fast. The problem is worsened by the fact that big foreign institutional investors in U.S. government debt – who might otherwise come to the dollar's rescue – are already over-weighted in dollars and more inclined to dump than accumulate more.

As the dollar continues to drop overseas (with Wall Street still closed), U.S. money wizards at the Fed and Treasury Department have no way to shut down markets for a "cooling off" period. As news spreads, lines form at European ATMs and foreign currency exchanges.

Even before Wall Street can open, the European Union suspends the acceptance of dollars for Euros, triggering an even bigger dumping of the dollar abroad. The U.S. retaliates by freezing all foreign transactions. By the time Wall Street rings the opening bell, trillions of dollars being hoarded by institutions and individuals are flooding onto the market, knocking the purchasing power of the greenback even lower.

Adding to the misery, OPEC no longer recognizes the dollar as a unit of trade. Oil producers will now accept payment only in gold, silver or other hard assets of equivalent value. U.S. oil companies wanting to buy crude must now pony up the funds in the form of a hard currency.

Americans have to start paying for cab service and food with cigarettes, liquor, and other tangible goods. Those stuck without barterable assets or real money (which is now understood to mean only gold and silver coins) are completely destitute.

Would you be surprised to learn such a scenario has already nearly occurred? Well, it has.

The Untold Story of How the Wheels Almost
Came Off the Cart on September 18, 2008

RECKONING IN THE EMPIRE OF DEBT

INTERNET////// To this day, no one can pinpoint exactly what (or who) triggered the September 18, 2008 run on the banks. All officials know is that gigantic withdrawals came upon the system from abroad, without warning or notice, and only extreme measures stemmed the crisis – and just in the nick of time.

The string of unprecedented bailouts may have saved the "too big to fail" banksters from getting their full comeuppance, at least this time. But the bailouts did nothing to resolve the underlying insolvency. They simply changed the time and manner in which the default will occur.

Instead of the country’s largest financial institutions all falling like dominos, it will be the currency itself that takes the hit. The trillions in newly created bailout dollars courtesy of the White House, the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve will help precipitate an inflation tsunami.

gringoman

Ibid.

INTERNET///// Even before Obama was sworn in, unfunded federal liabilities had blown past half-a-million dollars per U.S. family of four. In fact, federal finances are in such shambles David Walker, Comptroller of the Currency, resigned in disgust at the tail-end of the Bush administration.

Worse is what's happened since Walker resigned. As Rep. Ron Paul recently wrote, the trillions of dollars created to bail out banks in just the past six months have added the equivalent of a whole new federal establishment to Uncle Sam’s bloated obligations.

Obama’s new spending obligations stagger the imagination, amounting to...

More spending than the socialistic New Deal...
More spending than the entire Iraq War...
More spending than the 1980s savings and loan bailout...
More spending than the Korean War...
COMBINED!

I would respectfully disagree Fred.

Many had the same attitude regarding Ronald Reagan back in 1980. I think it's wise to never underestimate one's opponent, or the prevailing socioeconomic context of a particular moment in history. I would much rather see the opposing party nominate a quality candidate who I think I could personally live with, than to presume that my fellow citizens will happen to see the world as I do.

My, my, ChickenGringo, the sky does seem to be falling all around you down there.
Probably much too deep for the unschooled, and admittedly unfair to the rest of us who more or less pay as we go, is what the privilege of empire has wrought:
The Washington consensus. That is a bilateral understanding on US monatary policy. Perhaps an over simplification, however easy for even you to understand, is that the debt is held by those outside the US and it will be repaid with interest in dollars; devalued dollars.
Think of as a hidden tax on the rest of the world for all of those ships manned by those young sailors of which you are so fond..
Neat trick.
So sit back in your armchair as you are a bit beneficiary of the Satyricon in the cyber-coliseum. So why not an occasional thumbs-up?
Turn that frown upside down.

Keep holding out that tin cup. Don't let Republicans make #1 in it.

Dgscol

They are calling Palin "A Broad in Hong Kong".

Where is the Republican party going to? "Pro Life" and "Low taxes"? Back to Reagan? What most people arelistening for, however, are signs of a party that has ideas about economic recovery and good paying jobs for the American public that they are willing to place into action. According to one Congressman - you have to go along - with really no ideas being forwarded for jobs, and with the Fed, or decide to not be reelected(not because of the electorate, but because of a lack of party support). The arguments revolve around whether or not to reform banking instead.

Then could the Republicans possibly win - on a Pro-life issue? The Democrats at least are concerned about the public dilemma - support for housing, and medical care. The neo-Reagan Republican stance appears like the British position to place an embargo on Germany prior to WW2, to starve them out. Closing off a major faction of the American electorate and ruining the stability of their personal financing, is a program that slowly starves the public. Conservative complicity in this is political suicide for the Republicans.

Meanwhile the Fed is claiming recovery - meaning they have little regard for public distress and
as soon as people accept this, they will claim the recovery complete.

What the Republicans need is a Theodore Roosevelt, otherwise it is not a viable party. Republicans will still benefit from inertia - opposition to some of the worst things Democrats do.

Meanwhile the eviscerated "electorate" are building a way to confront their political closure. A tactful politician meets with the compadres of the eviscerated behind the scenes.

Perhaps they will talk with someone like Theodore Roosevelt and Sarah Palin.

gringoman

So according to Beck the 'racist, marxist, missing the birth-certificate' is better than McCain or Hillary.

Why does Wedeen keep getting dumber? Is it a new progressive tactic? Beck explained himself so that even the a legal primate from Canada should get it. Yes, McCain is very flawed. Yes, a fake conservative like McCain might have angered Americans, even dismayed them. But, (now the slow learner must pay attention) could McCain have awakened the "sleeping giant" like the lying scam artist macdaddy Commie Professor has? Very likely not. Ergo, the smooth Prog Man was preferable. Too much mental aikido for Kookistan?

Does the Montreal branch of Shyster Evening school give out "Affirmative Action" certificates for socialists? Are exams in human reasoning graded by Professor Vladimir, the sole surviving grandson of Lenin?

Why must Wedeen constantly become evidence on why Beck wrote 'ARGUING WITH IDIOTS'?

xbjllb

Great article. Obama can't and won't fix anything, because it's not meant to be fixed by the people that broke it in the first place. Plus he's gone to the idiots who broke it to fix it.

As to the discussion here: Sarah Palin will never be President. America is stupid, but not THAT stupid.

After being burned (and burned righteously) by picking the unknown "new guy in town", the STILL relatively unknown "new girl in town" doesn't have a chance in hell of being elected. Neither do the other "new" "guys" like Huckleberry (especially Huckleberry), Romorony, nor anyone who's ALREADY LOST before.

And that Indian kid from Arkansas or Alabama... you're kidding, right? That was someone's idea of a joke, right?

You're going to need someone new to the campaign, but who's been around for a long time, at least a decade or more.

I keep tellin' ya... get that illegal alien Obama exposed and you'll be able to waltz Schwarzeneggar into office with a mandate like never before seen.

At least 75% to 25% over Obama. Maybe even higher. But not a percentage point less.

And I don't even like him that much. But I think you're going to pull it off.

IF you get your heads together and figure out the obvious and get to work on that immigration problem of O's.

You want another Reagan? Well, DUH...

Monica,

Good job. According to the CBO, The Federal Budget now takes up 1 of every 7 dollars of our GDP. The deficit will triple (!) from $500 billion in 2008 to $1.5 trillion in 2009 or fully 11% of GDP (although the CBO projects that will start to retract in the "out" years) Ref [1].

What's worse, total government spending -- Federal, State, and local -- is projected at over $6 trillion. This is almost half our GDP! [2]

Socialist, statist ... by any definition our economy is only nominally capitalist.

In fairness, deficit spending is not new. It was aggravated under Bush, partly because of the wars, but largely because Bush was only moderately less profligate on domestic programs as Obama is, in relative terms. We should consider, too, that Bush campaigned as a conservative, but did not govern as such, whereas we knew Obama wanted to assist the auto industry (read: labor unions), impose government in the insurance and medical industry, and institute cap-and trade -- all with dollars borrowed from our children.

The solution is the following, but no Republican has the guts to suggest it:

1- A law limiting the Federal budget to 10% of the prior three year's average GDP.

2- A law limiting the national debt to 25% of GDP and the deficit to 10% of the budget, with any surplus applied automatically to the debt.

3- Shut down departments and agencies whose value are no longer justified (just exactly what does the Department of Commerce do, for example?)

4- Pro growth tax policy: end double taxation of business; institute a flat tax with no deductions or shelters except for a single generous allowance for basics--food, shelter, health; replace all Federal and state entitlements with a single "negative tax" (a check) to the poor.

5- Put social security and Medicare into a self-funding trust funds that Congress cannot touch.

6- End the oligopoly in each of 50 states' medical insurance markets; and end employer based insurance by shifting the corporate tax deduction to individuals.

These changes will shrink government; grow the economy and end unemployment; and provide a supply-side, free market solution to health care reform.

We can start by sending a copy of "Economics in One Lesson" (Hazlitt, Henry; Three Rivers Press, 1988, 50th anniversary edition) to every member of Congress.
