Bust out the sad trombones. New polling and economic data contain a lot of bad---but predictable---news for President Obama and the Democrats.
First, a new poll out by ABC News /Washington Post shows Obama's job approval is down to 41%---a new low in that poll. Opposition to Obamacare is up to 49%. (Read the poll results here: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/04/public-preference-for-a-gop-congress-marks-a-new-low-in-obamas-approval/ )
Although 6 months is an eternity in politics and anything could happen, it does look like attitudes toward Obama, the Dems, and the direction they're taking the country is pretty well set. Midterms are traditionally bad for the party in the White House--and this will be no exception---particularly given that Obama's job approval is so low. And given that the public really disapproves of the way he's handling the issues most important to them: Only 42% approve of his handling of the economy, 37% of his handling of Obamacare, and 34% of his handling of Russia/Ukraine. Democrat leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman Schultz are telling Dems to run proudly on Obamacare---which I heartily endorse, given that it's still deeply unpopular. In this poll, when people were asked whether they thought it was more important to have Democrats in charge in Congress to help support Obama’s policies or Republicans in charge to act as a check on the president’s policies, 53% say Republicans and 39% say Democrats. That's almost identical to the results of the same question when it was asked in September 2010, two months before the GOP landslide.
We also got word today that the U.S. economy has "slowed to a crawl," with growth in the first quarter at a measly 0.1%. The administration is trying to spin this as a result of the brutal winter, but we all know it's a result of the Obama economy. To add insult to injury, China is now on pace to replace the U.S. as the world's biggest economy THIS YEAR. (Read it here: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/d79ffff8-cfb7-11e3-9b2b-00144feabdc0.html#axzz30Nwlsv00 )
Buh-bye, American superpower.
And the folks in the White House are scratching their heads about why Obama's and the Democrats' poll numbers are so bad? Americans want jobs, a good economy, stable, decent, and affordable health care, and to be Number One in the world---none of which they're getting from Obama and crew. In fact, they're getting the opposite. And they don't like it.
