What They Need To Do

The Republican candidates for president will appear before CPAC over the next day or so to try to win over thousands of conservatives who have major reservations about each of them. They have their work cut out for them.

Mitt Romney has to convince the crowd that he is one of them or at least won't betray them. Rick Santorum has to convince them that he can beat Barack Obama. Newt Gingrich has to convince them that he is still viable.

After Tuesday night's losses, Romney suddenly looks a lot more vulnerable. His supporters are starting to be openly critical of him. The famous "turnaround guy" is failing to turn around his own campaign. He is still the frontrunner and his support still exists, but it's not infused with passion.

The hearts of many conservatives are with Rick Santorum. They're also starting to give him money and votes.

What happens next is anyone's guess. It could hinge on which candidate is the most successful in the job before them over the next few days.

Let’s cut the crap! Hearts maybe with Rick Santorum but he (as Obama) doesn't have the exp. to be POTUS. Being a poster child for Pro-Life is not what the country needs in a President. That is most conservatively admirable but not the whole package. People keep looking at and choosing candidates for all the wrong reasons. Romney is a VP at best and not the main guy. He needs the time to prove himself and pay for the bad decisions he made in a GOP leadership role. He has true failed REP leadership in MASS.

If conservatives are true to the basic definition of conservatism as resisting change, how would we afford four more years of no change? The danger of Romney is he would be afraid to make radical change. His Florida speech reminded a lot of Obama in 2008 except he promised more military spending rather than less.

You have to wonder why anyone would want to be President during the next four years. The baby boomers are past their spending peak which has driven the prosperity of the past decades, but also created the gigantic credit bubbles and unfunded liabilities. Government has stimulated all it can short of moving us to total war as in the 1940s. Then we could finance that one ourselves.
