Rick's Time

Alas, it's now Rick's time to bask in the warm glow of Republican primary approval. Yesterday, Rick Santorum won all three primary and caucus contests in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado. By a lot. In each state.

Technically, not a lot was at stake. Few delegates were up for grabs, and media attention wasn't nearly as intense as it has been for other contests.

But in terms of perception, a great deal was at stake. If Mitt Romney had swept those three states yesterday, he'd be the presumptive nominee. The whiff of inevitability would have become a tornado of inevitability. Everyone else would have receded. If Newt Gingrich had won at least one state, he would have re-energized his campaign, which is limping at this point.

But Rick Santorum won all three contests, and with that, has become---at this late date---the most significant viable conservative alternative to Romney. He's got to maximize this momentum going forward and translate it into fundraising and organization on the ground, particularly in the big states coming up on Super Tuesday in March. That's where Mitt is dominant and if he cleans up that day, it's curtains for Rick, Newt and Ron. So Santorum doesn't have a moment to waste. Campaigning, raising money and building ground games are all in front of him, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

His speech last night was awesome: from the heart, passionate, authentic. He spoke of freedom, the Constitution, and our God-given rights in ways that let you know that he actually believes in those things and that they're not mere talking points for him. He fearlessly defends conservative principles, and, frankly, he just seems so normal. That's no small thing when so many of our leaders are so weird.

Can he pull it out? I have no idea. In American presidential contests, as in life, anything is possible.

And sometimes, the tortoise beats the hare.

Snatorum may talk about God-given rights, but are we supposed to think he believes in them? He has capitalized on this totally phony idea that religious fanatics are somehow victims if employers who claim to be providing medical insurance for employees have to offer fairly broad policies. The most evil thing about Obamacare isn't even the economic mess it would make, it is that it leaves employers in control of access to medical care. That can make employees virtual slaves when they fear losing the job or looking for a better one might mean the death of someone in their family from loss of insurance.

How much power are we to give an employer to infringe individual freedom to satisfy his fanaticism? Jehovah's Witnesses think blood transfusions are sinful. Should a JW employer be allowed to blood transfusions from insurance coverage? Should a Muslim employer be allowed to demand that all employees kneel on a rug and pray five times a day or a Buddhist employer insist employees light incense in front of a statue of Buddha or a Catholic employer require employees to kneel to a statue of the Virgin Mary? Should a protestant employer who doesn't want to be bothered by worker pregnancy be allowed to require them to be on contraceptives? The greatest deterioration of freedom has been the ever increasing power of employers to destroy individual freedom.

The military is a special case where it is important to try to keep it apolitical. Did those whining about chaplains not being allowed to read a Bishop's letter to troops call for them to tell troops they must not fight in Iraq when the Pope said that was an immoral war and we should get out?

While the whole health care and tax system need an overhaul, it would be a start to allow health savings accounts to everybody not only the privileged aristocracy. It is reasonable that insurance should be restricted to very high cost treatment that would be beyond the means of the typical family.

What Santorum does not accept is that a right to freedom includes a right to make mistakes, to do stupid things, even to sin. A right to liberty has to include the opportunity to earn a living and some right to the property produced. If employers are allowed to take that away, you no longer have a free society.

My "backing" for OWFF Gingrich, did not, and still doesn't, rise to the level of endorsement, DJ. I'm still leaving "endorsement" to the powerful like Trump, as we can see what effect Trump's of Romney had in three States yesterday.

Do I still think Newt, this Old White Fatfugg, would make a better candidate than Mandate Mitt, and far less of a turkey for the Marxoids to feast on? Yes, of course I do. The G.O.P. still doesn't understand that Willard is the least "electable." But they will find out surprisingly quickly if and when they nominate him. By that time, the one thing that maintains his veneer of "electability," his ability to vastly out-spend and out-smear rivals, will be gone with the Gooper wind. He'll be up against a Smear Machine that can easily out-slime his own.

Curtains? If Romney is the GOP candidate it's curtains for conservatism.
