I find it incredible that the same media that had no interest in tracking down Barack Obama's illegal alien relatives, old girlfriends, and college and law school records is fixated on tracking down one of Newt Gingrich's ex-wives. This would be the same media who told us ad nauseum that adultery didn't matter when Bill Clinton was doing it.
Nevertheless, folks from ABC have thought it newsworthy to bring you Marianne Gingrich, Newt's ex-wife of many years, to talk about his "character" or lack thereof. I do not dismiss what she says. I do believe that character is critical in a president. I do take issue, however, with media hypocrisy on the issue. Newt has been very clear that he's made major mistakes in his life, for which he's asked forgiveness. He also dropped the family values stuff long ago when it became clear that he hadn't lived up to it himself.
The media's chasing down this story tells you a few things. First, they are scared to death of Newt. He pounds them every chance he gets for their outrageous bias. He's also an extremely effective conservative, so they fear that too.
It also shows you how Newt handles crises. He doesn't duck and cover. He takes it on full-frontal. This comes from being someone who has been through many political battles and has the scars to show for it. Get in front of the crisis, answer questions as gracefully as you can, and then move on. Unlike Clinton, Newt isn't lying about what went down. He's dealing with it, his daughters are also answering questions and now he's focused on South Carolina, after picking up endorsements there from Sarah Palin and Rick Perry.
Do I excuse Newt's behavior? I do not. But I also know that this country faces big problems, and I resent the media chasing down a personal relationship story from years ago of one GOP presidential candidate while allowing the current president to skate by with his radical agenda no questions asked.

Very well stated, Monica!

Simple, consice, and on point. Very well said Dr. Crowley. Any thoughts on this FBI/Bribe conspiracy flying through the net today?

Don't forget, that Newt's hypocrisy during his prior marriages was every bit as egregious as the news media's is. As is hypocrisy on global warming, right-wing engineering, Fanny and Freddie, positive campaigns, etc. Sadly, the American people are saddled with the fallout from hypocrisy on BOTH sides.

Michele Bachmann Says She Will Not Endorse Newt Gingrich
--
Michele Bachmann opines: "For me, these past weeks have been filled with much prayer and personal reflection - which has provided some clarity. Ultimately, I recognize that endorsing a candidate is the responsible thing to do.
But it is far more responsible to ensure that candidate is one I can support with a strong conviction knowing, without any doubt, that they protect our values and have the ability to restore our nation's greatness. With some doubt still present, I am not yet prepared to offer my endorsement, but look forward to doing so in the coming weeks.
However, through this exhaustive process of consideration, it was strikingly obvious that one candidate could not be less acceptable to be our Party's nominee. He lacks the poise, experience and moral fiber to represent our principles and values. That candidate is Newt Gingrich.
In sum, our nation is in desperate need of a proven and moral leader who can point us back in the right direction - not a desperately flawed candidate like Newt Gingrich who has only proven he cannot lead."
Posted by: DJ | January 19, 2012 at 12:46 PM
After tonight, no one will support him.
It'll be between Romney and Santorum. One a vulture capitalist, the other, a christian-extremist. Neither have a shot at taking down the "won".
And so it begins...the end of the GOP party. And good riddance.
Posted by: Rafe | January 19, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Newt has placed this issue behind him. There is no doubt of his loyalty to his children. Lord Romney, has not dealt with issues - his income tax withholding is singular, his Bain decision making is not explained, his desire to seek office being paramount to issues, and he has not yet explained Seamus.
Did anyone find out if Mitt, is short for mitten?
Posted by: Chief Joe | January 19, 2012 at 12:54 PM
The ONLY true "Cut the budget, support the Constitution 100%, audit the FED, Pro-life, Pro-gun, Conservative principles,..." candidate is Ron Paul.
If you want more of the same big government over reach and meddling in everything from raw milk to the internet: Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, or Obama will give it to you.
If you want Freedon FROM government; it's Ron Paul.
Posted by: LongRifle | January 19, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Hilarious defense of Newt, Monica! Thanks for my laugh of the day!
You must have complete amnesia to think the media has let Obama off the hook. Birthers, anyone??? Of course, you were a good one for pushing the birther stuff.
Now you offer a defense for Newt cheating on both of his first two wives. Talk about hypocrisy.
I just love the family values theme from the GOP, especially when there's NOTHING to back it up.

Romney's skills of successfully cutting cost and expenses in failing companies to save them and make them viable again seem to me to be an ideal match for what America needs at this juncture in time.
BUT, Romney misses the teaching opportunity point when he proclaims that "government does not create jobs". We see government jobs all around us, including the one Romney is seeking!
Romney should be pointing out that the salaries and benefits to fund government jobs must by definition come from government tax collections and/or newly issued government debt upon which interest must be also paid out until such debt is paid off through future tax collections.
Romney should also be pointing to government jobs and dead end jobs created by government wasteful government spending not motivated by the motive to make a profit, but instead motivated by paying off special interest groups like the environmental lobbyists, the unions, and large donors with their own agenda for America like George Soros..... SOLYNDRA, GM UNIONS at the expense of GM bondholders, BOEING UNIONS, Green energy projects that will be not be profitable, electrics cars that will be sold at a loss....

exactly how many companies were saved? the success story in Indiana with new technology for producing steel sounds kinda like to me, cutting off USA competition.....as well this venture was not only financed with Bain capitol but GE as well.........GE= Jeff Immelt=Obama Job Czar........
For working Americans to not get behind the guy responsible for this economy, frankly blows my mind

as for Michelle not endorsing Newt, sounds like she is still on the Romney payroll, & I have always had the feeling, all the bullsh*t caused in the GOP primaries came directly from that camp....but Bain & GE financing success stories does add a new wrinkle, dontcha think?

Great point about the network who wouldn't chase down BHO's past is now on the warpath for Gingrich. I'm so thankful for FNC to bring these points to light! If a person listened to the MSM, you'd think all is well in BHO's utopian world of big government, increased taxes, credit downgrades, etc. and the GOP were the cause of our nation's troubles.
Thanks again for stating what millions of us feel.

Yesterday is history and tomorrow is still a mystery , all any of us really have is right now . And right now this kangaroo administration is doing everything they can to topple capitalism . If i had only listened to a tenth of what mama tried to teach me in my youth i'm sure i could have been governor of both Florida and Georgia by now, mama tried lol . I made a ton of mistakes in my youth but do we not all have a story ? Scripture reads that wisdom is represented as female in proverbs , we all know girls are smarter than us fellas in that women mature much quicker than men in most cases . It seems Newt Gingrich was wild and promiscuous in his youth but , once we men finally do a lil growing up and discover that a womans spirit and mind can is just as attractive and alluring as her hair or hips ever where . We wayward ones finally grow up and " get that " and i'm sure Mr Gingrich has resolved the past with his god and family . I laught to myself everytime i picture my buddy Newt Gingrich standing up at that podium across from Obama in them Lincoln / Douglas debates , i'm sorry folks but Mr Gingrich gonna spank young obamas mind relentlessly

From the article Buck linked to:
---
Steel Dynamics was founded by Busse and two other industry veterans in 1993 with plans for a plant in Butler, Ind. They were looking for venture capital to help them.
"It normally takes two years to make a steel plant profitable," Busse recalled. "We didn't have two years. We were running out of money.
GE Capital (NYSE:GE - News) was interested, but CEO Jack Welch told Busse he didn't want to fund the whole thing because it would be the biggest gamble GE had ever taken on a startup.
Welch brought in Bain, which investigated the project. Busse said he met with Romney. Bain liked the deal and invested $18.3 million.
"Their general strategy is to exit early," Busse said. Bain later sold its stake for $104 million, according to a 2000 prospectus from Deutsche Bank.
The private equity firm should have held on longer. Steel Dynamics went public in November 1996, finishing its first month of trading with a split-adjusted price of 4.56 a share. The stock reached a peak of 40.92 in June 2008 for a gain of 797%.
