Here's why the GOP presidential race and whom we settle on as the ultimate nominee matters: Politico reports today that the White House has been telling progressives that they're going to "love" Obama's State of the Union address tonight. If we don't defeat Obama in November, America will be gone. And once she's gone, that's it. Game over. For us and the rest of the world.

Last night's GOP debate put the two-man, four-man race into bold relief. Rick Santorum had some great moments and looks like a mature, responsible adult with real, conservative solutions to our grave problems. Ron Paul had his fine moments too, particularly when he schooled the others and the audience about an out-of-control federal government, spending, the debt, inflation and the Fed. But right now, they are in the second tier---a close second tier, but second tier nonetheless. Paul is staying in until the bitter end, although even he admits he's not going to win the nomination. He's aiming to have an impact on the convention and the party platform. Santorum is moving forward on the glow of his Iowa win and still has some traction, but he's going to have to really outperform in Florida's primary next week to continue.

That leaves the top tier, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Newt is coming off his smashing victory in South Carolina, and Mitt is coming out swinging. Both of them got locked into a rather petty death match over tax returns, resigning in disgrace, and Fannie and Freddie consulting. On the one hand, I suppose it's good to have them get it all out of their systems now, get all the hits on the table, and start to innoculate the voting public to the negative stuff. On the other hand, they looked like two flies stuck in a bottle, hitting the sides and each other as they fail to realize the top of the bottle is open and they could fly out at any time.

Here's my advice to both of them: Quit the attacks on each other. Redirect them toward Barack Obama and his disastrous policies. Launch a charm offensive---toward each other and toward the voters. Be gracious. Be aggressive but positive. Keep your eyes on the Big Prize: defeating Obama.

I know, I know---going negative works. But both Mitt and Newt must remember that voters aren't just judging policies, ideology and intellect. They're judging temperament. Show a steadiness and a warm graciousness. Be passionate about America and how to fix her deep problems. Direct your fire toward the incumbent who is ruining her. We don't want an embittered, pissed-off candidate. We want an exuberant standard bearer---particularly since we can't rely on solid conservatism from either Mitt or Newt.

So, guys: fly out of the bottle and elevate the debate, the race and your own candidacies. Only one can win the nomination, but nobody in this race will regret taking that path.

Why isn't it important to point out weaknesses/past issues in a potential nominee - as long as the information is factual. Shouldn't voters be informed about the candidates and their histories? Although much of the negatives happened years ago, many voters are NOT aware, and have just become interested in the political process because of the dire situation in the country, or their age. I, for one, want to know about the character and past performance of the candidates.

As for the thread, I don’t know where people keep buying the media line that Newt can’t beat Obama. Right now any of the dead voters who voted for Newt in South Carolina could probably come close to beating Obama. If we have a dramatic improvement in the economy before election day maybe that will change, but for now any candidate that has a pulse likely will beat Obama.

I’m not thrilled at the prospect of EITHER Newt or Mitt becoming President, but either would be better than Obama! I’d even vote for Ron Paul if it came down to it, though he’s got some serious flaws that make him my last choice despite the many good things he has to say – some of which are, unfortunately, pipe dreams because the President can’t do that.

Ummah, there is very little we disagree on, but I beleive Obama is going to be VERY difficult to beat. He has the force of gravity times 10 (so to speak) working in his favor. I need not list all the advantages he enjoys. We already know them. Hence, this election is a 50/50 preposition if Romney is the nominee. The rest of the candidates would lose to Obama, IMO.

What we need is Ron Paul's economic policies coupled with John Bolton's foreign policy.

Gingrich won't ‘allow’ moderators to silence crowd at future debates — Newt Gingrich says he won't “allow” the moderators of future GOP presidential debates to keep the crowd out of it. — Speaking on Tuesday to Fox News, Gingrich took the opportunity that was denied him at Monday night's debate, and blasted the media.

gringoNOTE: Uh, oh, DJ. Looks like Mitt's undertakers, the Obamasuck and Club Gooper will have to find another way to hamstring the guy who some tell us the Goopers want. Newt won't let them reproduce that funereal calm of last debate that helped to squelch him. Newt knows their game too well, or what? Oh, well. Maybe Mitt can lay out another ten million on negative ads. After all, if out-spending Newt by 20 or 50 to 1 hasn't done the job yet, who knows what a little more of that lucre might accomplish. Even if, as the Beatles imply, money can't buy Mitt love, maybe it can get him a nomination?

Wow. What a great State of the Union speech. You could see it in the faces of every GOP bastard the camera scanned.

The inevitable DEATH of their party. Every last one of their Goddamned (literally) lies about Obama, flushed down the toilet for the entire world to see, and every last one of them feeling the tug of the pull of the whirlpool.

They don't have a prayer in the Hell they've made of the USA and the planet.

Michelle looked especially stunning tonight. Glad she figured out the advice between the lines about botoxing the frown lines. FANTASTIC result. Her smile never looked more pure. Like seeing someone for the first time.

Oh, it won't stop the "angry negress" comments. But it will make them more racist and ludicrous and desperate and outright LYING.

Oh, and it was good to see those frown lines on Obama's face almost the entire speech except for the one joke. Perfect delivery, no direct attack of any of the liars, just bludgeoning them to death with FACT after FACT after PLAN after PLAN after PLAN.

PERFECT speech. PERFECT night.

Oh. And I cannot WAIT for Gabby Giffords to knock John McCain into the trash can, forever. No one ever deserted their principles, stroke or no, or deserves enforced retirement more than that bitter half-crazy old man. Pity. He used to be an astounding man.
