While House Republicans couldn’t get their act together to approve an extension of the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits last night, they were able to do something far more frivolousness — commission a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to be placed in the Capitol. The House “adjourned moments after” passing the bill, which directs:

That the Architect of the Capitol place an appropriate statue or bust of Sir Winston Churchill in the United States Capitol at a location directed by the House Fine Arts Board in consultation with the Speaker.

The resolution was seen as a rebuke to the White House, which returned a bust of Churchill to the British Embassy in 2009.

House Speaker John Bohener (R-OH) shocked Washington Sunday when he said his caucus would reject the Senate’s compromise on the payroll tax package, even though it passed with an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 89-10. The House planned to reject the Senate bill last night, but postponed the vote after it became clear that some Republicans were going to agree with the Senate. Now, a $1,000 tax break for 160 million Americans hangs in the balance.

The Churchill bill was approved via unanimous consent, meaning the House didn’t have to waste much time considering it, but it underscores the absurdity of Boehner’s gaming of the payroll tax holiday vote.

That's the House Republicans for you. These bums will be voted out in 2012. And as Bachman stated, it will be the death of the GOP.

Big Bank Bonuses May Be Headed For Record Year | According to a new report from The New Bottom Line and The Public Accountability Initiative, bonuses at seven of the biggest U.S. banks — Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, US Bank, and Wells Fargo — will total about $156 billion in 2011, which would be “slightly larger than last year’s record breaking number.” Already, six of those seven banks “set aside more money for compensation through the first three quarters of 2011 than they did in the first three quarters of 2010.”

Rafe

Yesterday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) threw cold water on a temporary extension of the soon-to-expire payroll tax cut that had passed overwhelmingly in the Senate on Friday. “Well, it’s pretty clear that I and our members oppose the Senate bill,” Boehner said, despite the fact that on Friday he had called it a “good deal” and a “victory.”

House Republicans intend to vote down the Senate’s bill tonight, leaving the issue unresolved. But what happens if the payroll tax cut is allowed to expire? According to several economic analysts, it would severely affect growth and job creation next year:

– According to Macroeconomic Advisers, allowing the payroll tax cut to lapse “would reduce GDP growth by 0.5 percent and cost the economy 400,000 jobs.”

– Barclay’s estimated that letting the cut expire would knock 1.5 percent off of first quarter growth next year.

Meanwhile:

– Ameriprise Financial Services estimated that extending the cut “is likely to add between 750,000 to 1 million jobs.”

– Susan Wachter, a finance professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, calculated that the payroll tax cut “would add 1 percentage point to economic growth and create 1 million jobs next year.”

– Regional Economic Models Inc. estimated that the cut would pump “$120 billion into U.S. households in 2012.”

“If the Europe mess weren’t there, there would be a good case for letting taxes go back up,” said Joel Prakken, the chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers. “But a combination of a big tax increase plus the threat from Europe, when the economy is still in the doldrums — why take that risk?” If the House does vote down the Senate’s bill, the Senate will have to come back into session in order to craft a final agreement.

It doesn't matter? IT DOESN'T MATTER?

One party gives you a 50/50 chance of nuclear WWIII with Iran and the end of the US.

The OTHER party gives you a 100% chance with the same result.

Doesn't matter?

Amen BROTHER.

xbjllb

""It really doesn't matter." - longrifle

Yep. Didn't matter either between Gore and Bush. We just would have avoided:

1. 9-11
2. The Iraqnam and Afghaninam wars- longest in US history
3. The economic collapse because we would have retained the Clinton surplus

Doesn't matter. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright.

xbjllb

Looking at the above three presents from the GOP Presidency, makes you wonder just what else the bastards have got up their sleeves.

I mean, Goddamn Obama to hell for trying to get health care for every American the way Romney did in his state.

How dare he? How dare they? The poor need to die. Miserably. The sooner the better.

xbjllb

Obama should sign the House version of the tax cut bill for a year, and then, via Executive Order, UTTERLY NEGATE EVERY POISON PILL THE HOUSE PUT IN THERE INCLUDING THE PIPELINE, citing the Senate's overwhelming vote.

No, really. It's time for some balls to the wall action here. And NO ONE will be able to hear word one of the GOP screeching, screaming spin OVER THE CHEERING FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

xbjllb

And I KNOW I just got his attention.

Merry Christmas to you and the family, Mr. President.

DO IT.

xbjllb

Line-item veto? We don't need no stinkin' line item veto.

xbjllb

And don't forget to include that increased tax on the rich to pay for it, either.

If a President FINALY overrides Congress and FINALLY does what the overwhelming majority of the American People want?

Watch out 22nd Amendment. Buh-bye, faster than you can say FDR.

xbjllb

I just love these little talks of ours. Now, isn't it time somebody puts me on the payroll around here?

xbjllb

I think a nice Christmas Eve prime time speech (about 10 minutes, nothing longer) explaining everything that will be done via executive order and why ought to do it. And end it by joining some Christmas carolers on the White House lawn.

No matter what the House does in panicked response to this little plan.

It's a no-brainer.

"Pure Conjecture." - longrifle

Absolute fact. Prior to the election of hateful and worldwide LOATHED Bush/Cheney, because of ending the genocide against Bosnian moslems Clinton AND AMERICA had the GRATEFUL highest ratings from the Islamic world EVER. Terrorism was dying and virtually nil. Even if you believe (wrongly) that Bush Sr./Cheney wasn't behind 9-11, there would have been no reason to attack the US with a Democratic President continuing Clinton's policies. And IF you believe (rightly) that Bush Sr./Cheney were behind 9-11, they would have never dared to pull 9-11 under Gore's nose (and hand HIM all that power), for Gore would have had them hanging from the White house lawn after their treason trials.

"Yeah, right. Like no Dem President ever gave us a War...Like Vietnam, WW I or WW II, yeah, right..." - longrifle

They shot Kennedy because he was going to END Viet Nam quicker than he got into it. Johnson was installed because he was going to run it as long as possible.

I've lambasted FDR for the WAY he entered WWII and Truman for the way he exited it. But there was this guy called Hitler, see...

"Like it would be any different if Gore or Kerry or Kennedy et al were President. " - longrifle

Sigh. It WAS DIFFERENT UNDER CLINTON. LONGEST RUN OF PEACETIME ECONOMIC EXPANSION AND PROSPERITY FOR ALL, IN THE NATION'S HISTORY. QUIT IGNORING (or worse yet, rewriting) HISTORY.

"You libs live in your own fantasy world. We would have retained Clinton's surplus? LOLOLOL. " - longrifle

And then some. The surplus was GUTTED by tax cuts for the 1% America couldn't afford and TWO WARS FOR NOTHING AMERICA COULDN'T AFFORD.

What Clinton got wrong (and there were several things) Gore could have at least corrected.

Instead of going 180 degrees in the opposite braindead WRONG direction.

WRONG for everyone except the 1% and 1% offense contractors.

Ummah,

Good show. You and DJ are showing me your potential to swing Newt. How? You used the same kind of vitriol against another of my "maybes" who you now have softened to: Rick Perry. Nice. What's sauce for Perry's goose could be the same for Newt's gander. But first, you need to slam Newt some more. Go ahead. Get it all out.

BTW Let's be clear. The GRINGO ADVISORY BOARD has made no endorsement of anyone yet, including Newt. We are even holding the door open for ol' Rick, if he can find a way to get through it. So far he hasn't. GAB is in general agreement that RINOSAUR fave Romney is preferable to Obama, but would still be a disaster for American conservatism, just slightly less so than the Obamunists. GAB, unlike you, will never vote for Obama and unlike DJ, is extremely unlikely to vote for a third party in 2012, which would just be the coy way of voting for Obama.

GOP contender Rick Santorum picked up an important endorsement today with the official backing of Iowa kingmaker Bob vander Plaats of the FAMiLY Leader. Campaigning at the organization’s headquarters in Pella, Iowa, Santorum made some surprising remarks in support of income inequality:

“They talk about income inequality. I’m for income inequality. I think some people should make more than other people, because some people work harder and have better ideas and take more risk, and they should be rewarded for it. I have no problem with income inequality..

“President Obama is for income equality. That’s socialism. It’s worse yet, it’s Marxism,” Sanoturm said. “I’m not for income equality. I’m not for equality of result – I’m for equality of opportunity.”

Oddly, Santorum acknowledged that social and income mobility is lagging in America — a key reason income inequality exists, through no fault of workers who find themselves working harder and longer for less money. The decline of social mobility contradicts Santorum’s assertion that people making more money deserve it because they work harder.

The Occupy Wall Street movement has put America’s staggering wealth gap front and center in the national debate. Between 1979 and 2007, average after-tax incomes for the top 1 percent rose by 281 percent while middle class wages stagnated. The top 1 percent controls roughly 40 percent of the nation’s wealth. At the very top of the income scale, the 400 richest Americans have seen their share of income quadruple in the last 12 years, while their effective tax rates were halved.

A recent poll found that Americans’ fears about income inequality are growing, with two-thirds of likely voters saying the middle class is shrinking, and 55 percent saying that income inequality has become a big problem for the country. Santorum, evidently, thinks more of the same is what they need.

Rafe

I understand the fundamental point that Rick Santorum is trying to make. I agree that you should earn your keep in this world and those that work hard to be successful should not be burden by those that abuse the system or are just simply lazy. But what he fails to understand or rather, what he fails to acknowledge is that free market has been poisoned by those that corrupt capitalism. And that is exactly what most corporations and those who have wealth are doing.

Jay

And, leading up to the depression. The top percentage had 40% of the country's income.

so, the conditions are now what they were pre-depression.

From the early 1950s to right before 1980. The top had 8-10%.

We're working on it. Hang around and keep pushing.

xbjllb

OK. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I guess it has to be a "Taming of the Shrew" obsession. There is no way anyone could possibly believe the ridiculous desperate 180 degree spin presented in the "Obamasux" portion of tonight's program. Least of all Monica Crowley herself.

Here's my theory, for what it's worth: She acts out in order to (and as a feminist, I HATE to have to say this) be CORRECTED. By the right guy. At the right time. In the correct manner (probably not a spanking but something awfully close) FROM THE CORRECT POLITICAL ISSUE POSITION, THE LEFT. Of course, because she doesn't consider HERSELF to be a feminist, this analysis is probably accurate and what she is after. Good luck to any "conservative" guy who tries to be that tamer; he will find soon enough that no conservative dude will ever be man enough for Ms. Crowley. She wants desperately to be punished for her wrongdoing because, quite frankly, she's stuck and knows no other way out than to be forced. The shrew MUST be tamed.

That said and done, the first part of the show was just hilariously and utterly preposterous. Talk about projection. Unbelievable. One could only picture the trailer troglodytes and 1% in their castles in their powdered wigs soaking it up. Yes, absolutely NO obstruction has taken place the past three years except by the Democrats. It would be laughable had it not been such an audacious and dam*ning lie.

It would help gain credibility and a place in the world the majority of us live in to at least acknowledge the truth now and then, even if begrudgingly.

Of course, FOX is only interested in creating a completely alternate bubble universe, that hopefully by filling with poisonous and noxious gases and fumes, will hopefully and miraculously grow to crowd the rest of the real world out.

It worked for awhile, but now the opposite is happening, FOXWORLD is definitely shrinking, and it's a wonder the denizens who live there don't choke to death on their own bilge and Obamasux kindergartner level of PRE-racist hate. I wouldn't even characterize it as ADULT racism.

Ok, now to get personal. Perino needs to quit going to whatever plastic surgeon made Laura Bush look like an alien halfbreed. Whatever top secret strain of soylent green botox they're using on her, it's time to chuck it. Looking like a rubber doll is NOT attractive.

Kudus again to Tucker for actually saying something true at sometime or another. I actually liked the wacky Micky Dolenz character, and of course the interview with the football guy was interesting, and folks, here's a hint, Monica Crowley most definitely does not throw footballs like a girl.

That about wraps it up, except posing the eternal question; how does someone who gets everything so very wrong (and apparently believes it) manage to look so beautiful?

I have NO idea. One of the mysteries God will have to explain, and good luck to Him too!

Merry Christmas Princess! May you find your tamer, and SOON! Maybe under the tree this year, who knows?
