Bush Was Right, Volume 15,398

Well, it seems the Devil Bush and the Anti-Christ Cheney were right again. And again. And again.

Barack Obama has always wanted you to believe that he is a man of great consistency. He was consistent in his opposition to the war in Iraq. Consistent in his opposition to the surge. Consistently liberal on everything else, from abortion to taxes.

Yet now that he's president and discovering that governing is hard, he's not so consistent---especially on national security issues of the highest order. He's suddenly discovered---as we've said all along---that Bush was right.

Exhibit A: Mr. Transparency called for the release of CIA memos detailing enhanced interrogation techniques used against top al Qaeda terrorists. He suggested that once the memos saw the light of day, legal implications would follow. Bush administration officials would be tarred and feathered, just as the Far Left wanted. "Let's see where the memos take us" was the prevailing view. Until all Hades broke loose. A deep chill settled in at the CIA. Operatives in the field were afraid to move. The enemy had access to previously undisclosed sources and methods. Suddenly, prosecutions weren't so popular in the Bama White House anymore. Disbarments? Maybe. But trial and jail? No.

Exhibit B: During the campaign, the Bama railed against the military commissions process as a way to try the most dangerous terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. Unfair! Unjust! Un-American! they cried. These terrorists should have rights! Privileges! Lawyers! Their day in court! Charge 'em or let 'em go! Well now. After all of that breathless hyperventilating, Team Bama is considering going back to the military commissions they suspended in January (mid-Khalid Sheikh Mohammed trial) AND holding some of these jihadists INDEFINITELY without trial. What a difference being in the Oval Office makes.

Exhibit C: Today, the Bama reversed a prior position, in which he supported the release of photographs of alleged detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan. Citing national security and a concern about inflaming the Muslim world and putting American lives at risk, he said he'd now object to their release. Of course, the damage has already been done: all of this back-and-forth about them has made a bad situation worse. In the end, he did the right thing by trying to block their release---but not before drawing all of this attention to their existence and showing the world that he really doesn't know what he's doing.

Liberals are going bananas. Their great liberal hope is behaving more and more like their loathed nemesis, George W. Bush. They can't believe their eyes.

I can. He's Commander-in-Chief now, not some candidate running around Iowa. Filling Bush's shoes now has him realizing that his predecessor was, in fact, right. A lot.

I watched the O'Reily program last night and support your views on the Obama transition over release of photographs. He is a consumate master at manipulation.

If we are to commend this change of heart, we have to believe that his initial statements to release these photographs, and his days of "thoughtful" consideration on their release, were examples of mindless, senseless intelligence regarding the consequences of such action.

All Obama had to do was start the dialogue to agitate and raise levels of hatred again. Mission accomplished.

Obama is a green ambitious pol so this isn't news. No President has been able to hold onto the left base past 6 months. Why he has tried to hold onto them to this point is baffling? Let's also recall the Commander-in-Chief, who never thought it necessary to join the ranks--accused our troops, on the campaign trail, of "air-raiding villages and killing civilians"...

And let's not leave out those 'open-minded', 'tolerant' profs from our examples...their contributions of loathing the military have been too great to number...but let's look at one glaring example, for fun: These fraudulent facilitators of greater knowledge have, in the recent past, tried feverously to block military recruiters from campuses. The result was the people speaking vociferously through their representatives and the Solomon Amendment (1995-97), which denied federal funds to institutions of higher education that denied military recruiters access to campuses or the establishment of ROTC programs. The profs didn't learn their lesson...they challenged it all the way to the Supremes...but, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Solomon Amendment did not infringe on the First Amendment rights of schools that objected to it.

Awww...hatred can only take you so far...but not far enough to kick the ones protecting you...huh?

Here's a paradigm for the current administration: Israel, whose military is attacked almost daily--always states before an investigation, that the Israeli Military is the most ethical military in the world. Now, I greatly respect the IDF, but on ethics...the US Military is number one. But our government has an aversion to stating such truth. Instead, they opt to apologize for our troops behavior before any facts are known concerning an incident.

Now, there's an all-time morale booster for the guys!

1. America wasn't supposed to be better than that.

2. We all weren't raised with the lie that America IS, and always WAS, better than that.

You, on the other hand, not only obviously do not believe that America is better than that, but defend its empire at all costs, fascism, torture, war crimes, bigotry, and antiChristian Christianist/Zionist hatred because you believe, erroneously, that "they were that way first" and "they did it to us first" and in order to win against them we must sink to their level in order to wipe them off the face of the earth. Obama Considers Detaining Terror Suspects Indefinitely

The Obama administration is weighing plans to detain some terror suspects on U.S. soil -- indefinitely and without trial -- as part of a plan to retool military commission trials that were conducted for prisoners held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The proposal being floated with members of Congress is another indication of President Barack Obama's struggles to establish his counter-terrorism policies, balancing security concerns against attempts to alter Bush-administration practices he has harshly criticized.

On Wednesday, the president reversed a recent administration decision to release photos showing purported abuse of prisoners at U.S. military facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Obama cited concern that releasing the pictures could endanger U.S. troops. Mr. Obama ordered government lawyers to pull back an earlier court filing promising to release hundreds of photos by month's end as part a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The decision to block the detainee photos contrasts with the administration's release last month of Bush-era Justice Department memorandums outlining the interrogation tactics used on prisoners by the Central Intelligence Agency. The release of the memos set off a heated political fight, with supporters of the Bush administration accusing the Obama White House of endangering the country and some of the current president's supporters calling for criminal probes of those responsible for the interrogation policies.

The administration's internal deliberations on how to deal with Guantanamo detainees are continuing, as the White House wrestles with how to fulfill the president's promise to shutter the controversial prison. But some elements of the plans are emerging as the administration consults with key members of Congress, as well as with military officials, about what to do with Guantanamo detainees.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who met this week with White House Counsel Greg Craig to discuss the administration's plans, said among the proposals being studied is seeking authority for indefinite detentions, with the imprimatur of some type of national-security court.

Sen. Graham said he wants to work with the administration to pass legislation to increase judicial oversight of military commissions, but noted the legal difficulties that would arise.

"This is a difficult question. How do you hold someone in prison without a trial indefinitely?" Sen. Graham said.

The White House had no comment Wednesday about its detainee deliberations.

The idea of a new national security court has been discussed widely in legal circles, including by Bush administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey and Neal Katyal, a former Georgetown law professor and now Obama Justice Department official.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, at a hearing last month, hinted at the administration's deliberations, saying that there were "50 to 100 [detainees] probably in that ballpark who we cannot release and cannot trust, either in Article 3 [civilian] courts or military commissions."

The administration's move to block the release of military detainee photos was welcomed by Republicans in Congress and by some military family groups but condemned by the ACLU and others.

Mr. Gates, Gen. David Petraeus and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had all raised concerns with the White House about releasing the detainee photos. Mr. Gates and the commanders worried that the pictures would spur new anti-American violence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Someone important appears not to be telling the truth about her knowledge of the CIA's use of enhanced interrogation techniques (EITs). That someone is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The political persecution of Bush administration officials she has been pushing may now ensnare her.

Here's what we know. On Sept. 4, 2002, less than a year after 9/11, the CIA briefed Rep. Porter Goss, then House Intelligence Committee chairman, and Mrs. Pelosi, then the committee's ranking Democrat, on EITs including waterboarding. They were the first members of Congress to be informed.

In December 2007, Mrs. Pelosi admitted that she attended the briefing, but she wouldn't comment for the record about precisely what she was told. At the time the Washington Post spoke with a "congressional source familiar with Pelosi's position on the matter" and summarized that person's comments this way: "The source said Pelosi recalls that techniques described by the CIA were still in the planning stage -- they had been designed and cleared with agency lawyers but not yet put in practice -- and acknowledged that Pelosi did not raise objections at the time."

When questions were raised last month about these statements, Mrs. Pelosi insisted at a news conference that "We were not -- I repeat -- were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used." Mrs. Pelosi also claimed that the CIA "did not tell us they were using that, flat out. And any, any contention to the contrary is simply not true." The Obama administration's CIA director, Leon Panetta, and Mr. Goss have both disputed Mrs. Pelosi's account.

In a report to Congress on May 5, Mr. Panetta described the CIA's 2002 meeting with Mrs. Pelosi as "Briefing on EITs including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on [legal] authorities, and a description of the particular EITs that had been employed." Note the past tense -- "had been employed."
Mr. Goss says he and Mrs. Pelosi were told at the 2002 briefing about the use of the EITs and "on a bipartisan basis, we asked if the CIA needed more support from Congress to carry out its mission." He is backed by CIA sources who say Mr. Goss and Mrs. Pelosi "questioned whether we were doing enough" to extract information.

We also know that Michael Sheehy, then Mrs. Pelosi's top aide on the Intelligence Committee and later her national security adviser, not only attended the September 2002 meeting but was also briefed by the CIA on EITs on Feb. 5, 2003, and told about a videotape of Zubaydah being waterboarded. Mr. Sheehy was almost certain to have told Mrs. Pelosi. He has not commented publicly about the 2002 or the 2003 meetings.

So is the speaker of the House lying about what she knew and when? And, if so, what will Democrats do about it?

If Mrs. Pelosi considers the enhanced interrogation techniques to be torture, didn't she have a responsibility to complain at the time, introduce legislation to end the practices, or attempt to deny funding for the CIA's use of them? If she knew what was going on and did nothing, does that make her an accessory to a crime of torture, as many Democrats are calling enhanced interrogation?

Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy wants an independent investigation of Bush administration officials. House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers feels the Justice Department should investigate and prosecute anyone who violated laws against committing torture. Are these and other similarly minded Democrats willing to have Mrs. Pelosi thrown into their stew of torture conspirators as an accomplice?
It is clear that after the 9/11 attacks Mrs. Pelosi was briefed on enhanced interrogation techniques and the valuable information they produced. She not only agreed with what was being done, she apparently pressed the CIA to do more.

But when political winds shifted, Mrs. Pelosi seems to have decided to use enhanced interrogation as an issue to attack Republicans. It is disgraceful that Democrats who discovered their outrage years after the fact are now braying for disbarment of the government lawyers who justified EITs and the prosecution of Bush administration officials who authorized them. The Santopadres are not alone. The Social Security Administration, which sent out 52 million checks, says that some of those checks mistakenly went to dead people because the agency had no record of their death. That amounts to between 8,000 and 10,000 checks for millions of dollars.

The feds blame a rushed schedule, because all the checks have to be cut by June. The strange this is, some of the checks were made out to people -- like Romonini -- who were never even part of the Social Security system.
